Reading time: 2 minutes
An Alabama native could win this season of NBC’s The Voice. David Mitchell, who performs under the name D. Smooth, has advanced into the finals of season 23.
Keep reading to learn more about D. Smooth and his journey to the finals.
Raised in Birmingham
Although Mitchell now lives in Montgomery, he was born and raised just outside of Birmingham. According to al.com, the Minor High School graduate has performed locally in places like the Eighty Eight and Encore Theatre & Gallery in Birmingham, B.B. Kingβs Blues Club in Montgomery and the Comedy Club Stardome in Hoover.
D. Smooth is one of two contestants with Montgomery ties, the other being 15 year old singer Ryley Tate Wilson, who competed in the semi-final but was not voted into the finals.
As his profile on The Voice says “D.Smooth was about to take the stage at the Season 21 Blind Auditions when the teams filled up. Looking back, heβs grateful he didnβt get a chance to perform at a time when he wasnβt giving 100% to music.” Now that he’s back at The Voice, he’s ready to “give it his all.”
Success on The Voice
On the show, D. Smooth has impressed judges by adding his own flair to popular songs such as Khalid’s “Location” and Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud” and “Perfect”. He has especially caught the attention of Kelly Clarkson, who has been his celebrity coach throughout the season.
βKelly turning for me as early as she did, it kinda surprised me,β D. Smooth said during the show. βIt was a reassurance, you know, and at that point I just had to keep singing. I didnβt even look at her when she turned around. I just looked at the crowd.β
