In mid-2022, Kroger Delivery began making grocery deliveries in the greater Birmingham area through their new distribution hub in Homewood. With fast delivery, kind faces and affordable prices on fresh, high-quality products, Kroger Delivery has already made a great impression in The Magic City.

We spoke with Morgan Dale, a Human Resources Generalist at Kroger Delivery, to learn more about the work environment and job opportunities in Birmingham!

How does Kroger Delivery work?

At this point, you might be asking yourself, “how does Kroger Delivery work if the nearest Kroger is in Huntsville?” The magic lies in the company’s advanced delivery network and the dedicated team at the Birmingham fulfillment center.

When you place an order through Kroger Delivery, your items get packed into an 18-wheeler transportation truck and driven from Atlanta to Birmingham in the morning and mid-afternoon. From there, orders are placed in refrigerated delivery trucks to insure freshness and delivered by professional drivers in convenient one-hour time slots.

Why employees love working for Kroger

Morgan Dale has worked as a Human Resource Generalist for Kroger Delivery for nine months, but she’s been in the Human Resources field since college graduation.

“My mom told me from the beginning of college to study HR, but I changed my major four times before figuring out she was right! I really like interacting with new people and I got involved in my college’s Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) club. I knew Human Resources was a career I wanted to get into post-college.”

For Morgan, no two days at Kroger Delivery are alike. However, a typical week usually includes:

  • A new hire orientation to on-board new team members.
  • Teaching Driver Academy, to train all new hires to correctly operate the Kroger Delivery vans.
  • Hosting hiring events with open interviews for potential new employees.
  • Meetings with Transportation Managers and other employees.

At least once a week, Morgan gets up early to see off the drivers for the 5AM shift.

“I like to visit and check in on our morning drivers. I have to commend them for working that early—when I come in at 5AM, my eyes may be open but they are not awake!”

Employing a diverse workforce

As a Human Resource Generalist for Kroger Delivery, Morgan knows just how important it is to work in an inclusive environment.

“I take pride in working for a company that is so inclusive. I myself am a minority—I am an African American woman that is also a part of the LGBTQ community, and I feel lucky to have been given this opportunity. Kroger doesn’t discriminate on age, race, religion, sexual orientation, etc and I make sure to fulfill that inclusivity when hiring drivers. In fact, in 2022, Kroger received a top score of 100 on the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s 2022 Corporate Equality Index, the nation’s foremost benchmarking survey and report measuring corporate policies and practices related to LGBTQ+ workplace equality. That’s an incredible recognition our company truly represents through our encouragement to our associates to never judge someone on how they look, what they believe in or who they identify as. We just ask that you return that kindness to other employees and our customers.”

Diversity, equity and inclusion are important to all Kroger Delivery locations—but perhaps most impactful in cities like Birmingham.

“Birmingham—one of the most prominent locations of the Civil Rights Movement—was not inclusive 60 years ago. However, at Kroger, as a continuation of our efforts to create a more inclusive culture in our company and advance equality in our communities, we launched our Framework for Action: Diversity, Equity & Inclusion plan in response to the racial injustice seen in our communities and around the world. These are important building blocks to help break out of the ‘Deep South stereotype’ and let people know that, regardless of how you look, regardless of anything that might have separated you from being included in the past—at Kroger, everyone is welcomed.”

In new markets like Birmingham, Kroger makes an extra effort to look for talent in communities that might not be familiar with the organization.

“We try to spread the word as much as possible, through word of mouth, advertising and reaching out to different organizations in Birmingham. Kroger does offer competitive wages and benefits, so I want to make sure that these opportunities are made available to everyone which includes people in impoverished communities. A lot of people are just looking for a chance, and I would love to be able to give that chance.”

Since part of Morgan’s job is interviewing new applicants, she let us in on what she looks for in new employees.

“At Kroger, Our Purpose is to Feed the Human Spirit™. We do that through Our Promise to be friendly and caring, provide everything fresh, to uplift every way, and improve every day. We look for those same characteristics during the hiring process. We want all of our drivers to be personable and bring great energy to every single Kroger Delivery. The way our drivers interact with customers is one of the main ways that set Kroger Delivery apart from any other delivery service.”

“My number one advice for people coming in for an interviewing is to make sure you stand out. Dress up and look your best, make direct eye contact, shake hands and present yourself as the whole package. Use the interview as an opportunity to brag on yourself—your accomplishments, skills you can bring to the team, etc. Let me know what you will bring to the table!”
