Starting Wednesday, February 1, The Modern House Coffee Shop will sell a new “Legacy” blend honoring the legacy of A.G. Gastion, who played an important role in the movement to remove legal barriers to integration in Birmingham.

This blend is limited edition with only 1000 bags available. 10% of all sales will be donated back to the A.G. Gaston Business Institute.

Introducing the Legacy Blend

Owner Troy Whetstone is looking forward to honoring such an important legacy with this limited edition blend.

“The Legacy Blend is very special to me. Dr. A.G. Gaston is a Civil Rights pioneer that often gets overlooked nationally, but also locally. Dr. Gaston was the first Black millionaire in the State of Alabama. He is “The Entrepreneur” in the African American community. This is about more than coffee. This coffee is roasted in Birmingham, Alabama under my company and this coffee is my legacy footprint to leave behind.”

According to the coffee shop’s website, A.G. Gaston’s legacy is right in line with the mission of The Modern House.

“He was famous for saying his business dealings were based on ‘finding a need and filling it.’ This thinking is why The Modern House exists today.”
