Birmingham Legion FC to play majority of 2023 home schedule on weekends
The much anticipated Birmingham Legion FC schedule has been released.
Here are the details.
The Rematch
Entering their 5th season in the United Soccer League Championship under a new format, the Legion will play every team in the Championship League—24 teams.
How are they going to squeeze that into a 34 game schedule?
Birmingham will play the 11 teams in the Eastern Conference twice each, once at home and once away, and then will play all twelve of Western Conference teams one time each, with half of those contests taking place at Protective Stadium.
The 2023 regular season kicks off at Protective Stadium on Saturday, March 11 at 6:30pm versus the Pittsburgh Riverhounds in a rematch of last year’s playoff showdown which ended with kicks from the mark.
More Numbers
Because the 2022 season was interrupted by a full league schedule of USFL games—40 in total—plus the The World Games, the Three Sparks had to play many of their home games on Wednesday evenings. This year will be much different.
88% of Legion FC’s home games in 2023 will take place on the weekend this season. The Legion will play on 10 Saturdays, 4 Sundays and on one Friday.

Playoffs
At the conclusion of the regular season, the top eight teams in each conference will qualify for the 2023 USL Championship Playoffs. The USL Championship Playoffs will remain a single-elimination format and will return to a fixed bracket format, culminating in the 2023 USL Championship Final on a to be determined date from November 9-13, 2023.
