That’s right, Southern Market is back and better than ever. In June 2022, the market closed due to a tree knocking out a powerline behind the store and damaging the power. Owner Rachel Hodges explained the damages she suffered in an interview with Gardendale Magazine.

“It burned up all our compressors in the freezers, blew up both air conditioners, and we lost an independent freezer up front. We lost everything and it happened so quick.”

Now, after almost four months, customers can enjoy their favorites and a few new items from their beloved local market including an expansion in meat offerings.

The grand reopening celebration was filled with giveaways, free hotdogs and snow cones. Loyal customers and the entire community showed up to support Hodges and the Southern Market.

“I just want to say thank you for your support to our customers. We have messages daily from people saying I miss you and I can’t wait for you to reopen. Every single day since we have been down, we have had somebody send us a message about how they miss us. That means the world to us because that’s our livelihood and we feel like this is our outreach: serving the community.”
