A brand new, exciting public transportation system is coming soon to The Magic City—the Birmingham Xpress! As Alabama’s first Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) line, the Birmingham Xpress will offer fast, reliable and cost-effective transport to residents throughout The Magic City. Keep reading to learn more.

Say Hello to the Birmingham Xpress

Looking for a new and reliable way see The Magic City that won’t break the bank? You don’t have to wait long. The long-awaited Birmingham Xpress is set to begin operations soon, connecting 25 neighborhoods from East to West.

Using Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) technology, the Birmingham Xpress will be able to provide fast, reliable and cost-effective mobility services spanning from Woodlawn to the Birmingham Crossplex. But that’s not all! Passengers on a Birmingham Xpress bus will have access to a number of handy features, including:

  • Seating for 25 to 30 passengers
  • Free internet service
  • Cell phone charging plugs
  • Self-securing wheelchair parking
  • On-board bike rack
  • Automatic vehicle location (AVL) + transit signal priority (TSP) technologies

Once operational, the Birmingham Xpress will be unlike any traditional bus experience. It will utilize dedicated bus lanes to bypass traffic and be outfitted with special technology that gives it priority at intersections.

Excited to start using the Birmingham Xpress? So are we! Luckily, we don’t have to wait long. According to the City of Birmingham, the Birmingham Xpress is gearing up to begin running very soon.

Once Birmingham Xpress is running, you can catch a ride Monday through Friday from 5AM to 11PM, and on Saturday from 7AM to 10PM. Buses will run in 15-minute intervals (headways) during peak periods and 30-minute intervals (headways) during off-peak periods and on weekends. ​
