On May 16th, Homewood chef Jeffrey Compton of The Battery won gold at the 7th annual Alabama Gulf Seafood Cook-Off. Read on to learn more about his delicious win.

Alabama Seafood Cook-Off winner, Jeffrey Compton has earned his stripes in the food industry over the past 14 years. In April 2021, he became executive chef at The Battery in Homewood, a sophisticated Southern kitchen in the former Little Donkey space. He is continuing to prove his worth at state-wide competitions—just like the Alabama Seafood Cook-Off.
Winning the Alabama Seafood Cook-Off
The Alabama Seafood Cook-Off is an annual cooking competition located at The Lodge at Gulf State Park in Gulf Shores. Countless chefs from across the state submit their applications and recipes, but only four finalists are chosen.
Their dishes are judged in five categories:
- Presentation, General Impression, and Serving Methods
- Creativity and Practicality
- Composition and Harmony of Ingredients
- Correct Preparation and Craftsmanship
- Flavor, Taste, and Texture
The top winner receives a $2,500 cash prize.
So, what was Chef Compton’s prize-winning dish?
According to the Birmingham Business Journal, Chef Compton’s butter poached redfish with new potato and blue crab salad, late spring vegetables, lemon bay aioli and garden herbs. Is your mouth watering now?
He will compete in the Great American Seafood Cook-Off in New Orleans on August 6. Will he be deemed the top seafood chef in the country? We will have to wait and see.
