The mission of ArtPlay is simple. They’re providing lifelong learning through the arts to all ages, skill levels, incomes and geographical areas. That translates to a wide variety of classes and an incredibly inclusive environment.

From free community programs that make learning fun to adult improv classes, ukulele for beginners and just about everything in between, there is truly something for everyone.

“The ArtPlay house is really magical. There is something special about having a place where you can create something new, meet a new friend and discover a love of all the arts under one roof. There are a lot of students that call ArtPlay ‘home’. It’s really a wonderful place where children and adults alike can be themselves and create together, whether that be on a canvas or on stage.”

— Heath Mixon, Director, ArtPlay

The history of ArtPlay

Way back in 1896, the house served as a residence for some very lucky folks for about 45 years. Since then, the home has welcomed many guests and tenants, including a chiropractor. It even functioned as a boarding house during the Great Depression.

Fortunately, many of the original components remain, including the gorgeous oak double doors that welcome you in. And, thanks to Jane Stephens Comer’s generous donation to UAB’s Alys Stephens Center, the 1800s Victorian home has now taken on its current role as HQ for ArtPlay.
