Slip on your engineering hat! Saturday, February 27 is the Engineering Showcase at McWane.

Held during National Engineering Week, McWane welcomes engineering fans of all ages to celebrate the occasion with a variety of cool activities. 

  • Take part in engineering design challenges featuring mechanical, electrical, chemical, computer, metallurgical and biomedical engineering. 
  • Learn from engineering professionals and companies from throughout the Greater Birmingham Area as they demonstrate various types of engineering as well as some of the coolest engineering innovations around. 
  • Get a behind-the-scenes glimpse at the educational pathway and personal commitment it takes to become a future engineer.

To take part in McWane’s Engineering Showcase, here’s what you should know:

Date: Saturday, February 27
Time: Programs are available throughout the day from 10AM-5PM.
Price: Programs are included in general admission to McWane Science Center.
Tickets: Available online and at the door.

Ready, set, Spring Break!

Spring Break will be here before you know it. What will your kids be doing to stay entertained? Before they can exclaim, “I’m bored,” sign them up for Spring Break Camp at McWane

Taking place March 22-26, kids in grades pre-K to sixth grade (ages 4-12) have the exciting chance to delve into the world of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math). Through hands-on, minds-on activities, campers will:

  • Learn about oceans
  • Journey into outer space
  • Build robots
  • Discover dinosaurs
  • And more!

Spring Break Camp Safety

McWane will continue to closely monitor COVID-19 rules and regulations. To keep campers safe and healthy, McWane will have the following safety measures in place during Spring Break Camp:

  • Campers and staff will be required to wear masks.
  • The number of campers has been reduced.
  • Social distancing and sanitization requirements will be strictly enforced.

Important Spring Break Camp Details:

  • Camp Dates: Monday-Friday, March 22-26
  • Time: Pre-K-Kindergarten, Daily from 9AM-1:30PM | Grades 1-6, Daily from 9AM-4PM 
    Before care and aftercare are available for no additional cost. Before care – 7:45-9AM | Aftercare, 4-5:30PM
  • Price: Pre-K-Kindergarten, Members – $50/day, Non-Members – $60/day | Grades 1-6: Members – $70/day | Non-Members – $80/day | *Lunch included in price.

If a camp is canceled by McWane Science Center, a full refund will be returned to the registrant. If a registrant cancels a camp, a 50% refund will be made if the registrant notifies the Camp program in writing, which is emailed, postmarked, or faxed no later than 10 working days prior to the camp.

So does McWane. That’s why, along with the Engineer Showcase, they’ll be hosting Dream Big: Engineering Our World in the IMAX Dome Theater. 

This larger-than-life documentary by Filmmaker Greg MacGillivray explores the human ingenuity behind engineering marvels that drives engineers to create better lives for people around the world. Sneak peek the movie trailer here

Take part in an historic event at the IMAX this February

NASA’s Mars Perseverance Rover makes its final descent to the Red Planet on Thursday, February 18. To celebrate this historic event, McWane will be showing the Rover Landing on Mars live at the IMAX Dome Theater.

Only about 40% of the missions sent to Mars have been successful and Perseverance is only the fifth rover to attempt landing on Mars.

Will the mission to a success? Find out when you watch the action from the mega IMAX screen.

Date: Thursday, February 18
Time:  The IMAX Dome Theater opens at 2PM. The landing occurs at 2:30PM.
Price: Members – FREE | Non-Members – Included in General Admission to McWane’s Adventure Halls.
