Y’all know we love a good food truck here at Bham Now. That’s why we were stoked to learn from our friends at The BBJ that Underground Vegan has a food truck that started visiting Hoover and Birmingham on the regular in September 2020. Keep reading to find out more.

Filling a need in Birmingham’s food scene

Alright, so we were actually late to the party on this one. Once I started digging in to learn more about Underground Vegan, I found out they already have 2734 followers on Facebook, 2277 on Instagram and they’ve been hosting tons of sold-out pop-ups and food truck stops.

And, I discovered the 7-year strong @bhamvegans Instagram account which has loads of other places we didn’t know about yet so stay tuned for more vegan updates now that we are clued in.

Birmingham’s nowhere near vegan paradises like Louisville yet, but we’ve got a growing number of options. Just last week, we wrote about how Slutty Vegan plans to open a restaurant here. Now, with Vegan Underground, there are more. We can’t wait to try the food.

Fan-favorites include:

  • Dirty Birdy—a mix of Southern coleslaw + vegan fried chickun
  • Vegan Shrim Po Boy—classic vegan shrimp sandwich with lettuce, tomatoes + special sauce

According to The BBJ, founder Khalilah Sowell spent more than a decade homeschooing five kids before starting her pop-up food company back in late 2019. Meaning picky eaters taught her a lot of about cooking tasty food.

Hoover + Birmingham are the lucky first stops on the new food truck’s route, but they plan to expand to other areas soon. Who else can’t wait?

Follow Vegan Underground on Instagram and Facebook to find out where they’ll be next. If you go, snap some pix of your food and tag us on social @bhamnow.
