The Women’s Fund of Greater Birmingham? What is that?
I wish I would’ve known about The Women’s Fund a long time ago, but better late than never, right? The Women’s Fund of Greater Birmingham is Alabama’s first and ONLY philanthropic foundation solely addressing the needs of girls and women. Imagine a society where your gender doesn’t limit your access to certain opportunities. That’s the society that The Women’s Fund envisions and strives for.
Since their founding in 1996, they have continued to drive economic opportunities for women and their families. As a matter of fact, The Women’s Fund of Greater Birmingham invested over $5 million—yes, that’s seven figures—in research, policy and initiatives that support women in five counties, including Jefferson, Walker, Shelby, Blount and St. Clair.

Be Smart, Birmingham
This year, the 2020 Smart Party will be virtual which is probably no surprise. But, not even a pandemic can stop us from honoring the women who help shape our communities and beyond—even if it’s through a screen.
“We may not be together in the same room, but we can still join forces to build
The Women’s Fund of Greater Birmingham’s VP of Development Stephanie Alexander Maxwell
gender equity in Alabama. The 2020 Smart Party will be especially relevant as we discuss the critical need for women to advocate and influence policy change.”
The virtual event will honor the 2020 Smart Honorees and feature a conversation between the President and CEO of The Women’s Fund of Greater Birmingham Melanie Bridgeforth and senior advisor to the Obama Foundation Valerie Jarrett. They’ll be discussing the influence and power of women as well as the critical role that women’s political and civic participation plays in building an equitable society.
Jamie Golden will be your emcee and she has a few surprises that you won’t want to miss.
Meet the women you need to have on your radar
This year’s Smart Party will honor a group of twelve prestigious women who are leading, organizing, creating and just being an absolute boss to better their communities.
So without further ado, meet 2020 honorees.
