Highway 280 may be known for its traffic, but it also leads to a pretty cool area of town—Brook Highland (or unincorporated Shelby County for the uninitiated). Here are four businesses opening in the area.

1. Best Buy

For those in the market for appliances or electronics, Best Buy will soon be setting up shop at the Brook Highland Plaza shopping center off Highway 280. This is great news for those who live in the areas of Chelsea, North Shelby County and Greystone.

The well-known blue and yellow storefront will be taking the place of the former Dick Sporting Goods and will be will be joining other popular retail stores like Office Max, Lowe’s and Ulta Beauty.

There will be some perks at the new location, too, like:

  • A refreshed look
  • Expanded product assortment
  • More premium brands

Opening Date: TBD

2. Miami Fusion Cafe

Miami Fusion Cafe is expanding a taste of the Caribbean with a second location coming to Highway 280 near Brook Highland.

Owned by Luis and Samantha Delgado, the couple said the pandemic played a key role in the location they chose.

“We have a current clientele and many people are now working from home and we strategically picked this location to be closer to residential homes. We listened to our customers and this area was one of the most recommended.”

the couple said they have had a way better response to the news of their new location than they could have expected.

The Delgado’s also said they’ve had a much better response to the news of their new location than they could have expected.

“Customers we had years ago that never made it to downtown [Birmingham] are excited for us to be closer.”

What can you expect from the new location?

  • 1,700 square feet of space
  • A welcoming atmosphere with Latin music that takes you from Birmingham, Alabama to South Beach, Florida
  • Menu favorites like Mofongo—an original Puerto Rican dish with fried green plantains mashed with fresh garlic and pork cracklings.
  • Caribbean drinks
  • Outdoor seating

While the lunch menu will look similar to that of Miami Fusion Cafe’s downtown location, the dinner menu will see some changes including higher-end options like Churrasco and Ropa Vieja.

Though we don’t have a set date on when the new location will open, in the meantime, we’ll be dreaming of their delicious island-inspired dishes. Here are some to have on your radar:

  • Caribbean Jerk Chicken: seared chicken breast topped with fresh mango salsa. Service with rice and your choice of red or black beans or a side salad.
  • Fried Yucca Sticks: the crispier creamier cousin to fries.
  • Cuban sandwich: slow roasted pork, Boar’s Head Sweet Ham & Baby Swiss cheese with mustard + pickles. Served on fresh Cuban bread.
