With the new Parkside Trail opened up, there’s no better time to take a new bike for a spin. Photo via REV Birmingham’s Facebook.

What have I learned from social distancing? I literally have zero hobbies—which is why with all the beautiful weather we’re having I decided to buy a pair of roller skates and learn something new! Grab some wheels or other outdoor gear from local Birmingham biz and hit the pavement (or the water).

Keep in mind that as businesses begin to slowly re-open, hours and procedures may be adjusted. Check with these local shops ahead of time before heading out.

1. Redemptive Cycles

Redemptive Cycles’ mission is so cool—it really embodies what Birmingham aims to achieve all over the city, and makes me want to shop there exclusively. Right now, you can browse the selection online and make an appointment to test out a bike.

2. Mountain High Outfitters

Mountain High Outfitters’ stores are OPEN and ready for you to pop a wheelie on one of their bikes—not inside the store, please. You can take a look at what they’ve got online and make sure the bike is in-stock before going to the store.

3. The Yak Shak

If I could kayak every day I would be a lot less stressed, and could probably finally do a push up. We have some amazing spots to ‘yak at in Birmingham and apparently people took notice because there’s been an increase in demand for kayaks.

Pre-order yours from the site using the contact info below and make sure to check their updated list for what’s left daily.

4. Cahaba Cycles

I just spent a don’t-tell-my-boss amount of time looking through Cahaba Cycle’s Instagram at all the tips and advice they have about bike riding—including how to make espresso. I can only imagine visiting the experts in person would be even more helpful.

The stores are open and limiting the amount of customers allowed in at one time.

5. Bob’s Bikes

As of now, Bob’s Bikes is still curbside but their website has some fire options for what you can pick up—including specialized cycling shoes which I’ve decided I need. I don’t cycle, but there’s always room for improvement when cute shoes are at stake.

Honorable mention: this pup I saw on REV Birmingham’s Facebook
