September is a hot month–pun definitely intended–for races in Birmingham. Whether you’re looking for a 5k, 10k, fun run or walk, there are several options for you. Who wants to get outside and support some great causes? Here’s a list of six runs coming up this month. 

1) Darter Dash 5k/10k

Looking for a scenic run? Check out the Darter Dash. This partly paved, partly trail run is hosted by Turkey Creek Nature Preserve and Birmingham Ultra Trail Society (BUTS). Proceeds benefit educational programs at the preserve. 

When: September 14 at 8:00 a.m.

Where: Turkey Creek Nature Preserve, 3906 Turkey Creek Road, Pinson, AL 35126

Cost: $30 for 5k, $35 for 10k

2) 6th Annual Alabama ASDA Miles for Smiles

Miles for Smiles is a 5k and one-mile fun run in Homewood benefitting Cahaba Valley Health Care (CVHC), a group that provides dental and medical services to underserved residents in Jefferson County.

When: September 14 at 8:00 a.m.

Where: 2823 Central Avenue, Birmingham, AL US 35209

Cost: $35 for 5k, $30 for fun run

3) St. Jude Walk/Run Birmingham

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. You can show your support for the children at St. Jude by participating in this race!

When: September 21 at 8:30 a.m.

Where: Railroad Park, 1600 1st Ave S., Birmingham, AL 35233

Cost: $20 for 5k, $10 for walk

4) 10th Annual Head Over Teal 5K/10K Family Fall Festival

September is also Gynecological Cancer Awareness Month. According to the National Cervical Cancer Coalition, more than 89,000 women in the U.S. are diagnosed with GYN cancer each year. The Head Over Teal event is held by the Laura Crandall Brown Foundation in Birmingham.

When: September 21 at 8:00 a.m.

Where: 601 Preserve Way, Hoover, AL US 35226

Cost: $40 for 5k, $45 for 10k (each has an additional $3 sign up fee)

5) Sistah Strut 2019

The Sistah Strut is a 5k run and fun walk that seeks to provide breast cancer awareness and early detection. It’s hosted by Brenda’s Brown Bosom Buddies. 

When: September 28 at 7:00 a.m.

Where: Legion Field, 400 Graymont Ave W, Birmingham, AL 35204

Cost: $25.00 in advance and $35.00 the day of the race, but no one will be turned away for inability to pay

6) 5k At The Junction

Proceeds from this race in Ensley benefit the Sole and Socks Campaign, which purchases socks and shoes for Jesse’s Place and Jimmie Hale Mission. There’s also a one-mile fun run!

When: September 28 at 8:00 a.m.

Where: 19th Street Ensley – Birmingham, Alabama

Cost: $20
