Listening to a storyteller can be enchanting. To hear their poems and their scars told in a beautiful way is awe-inspiring. This past week, BACHE hosted their Visiting Writers’ Series with special guest, Derrick Harriell. In hopes of uniting the resources of the universities in Birmingham, BACHE invites everyone in the community to come listen to a writer read their stories and share their life.

What is BACHE?

Founded in 1996, BACHE stands for The Birmingham Consortium for Higher Education. Every semester they host public readings at all five of the universities in Birmingham region including Birmingham-Southern College, University of Alabama at Birmingham, Samford University, Miles College and the University of Montevallo.

What is the Visiting Writers’ Series?

The Visiting Writers’ Series allows for these universities to have a reading at each of their respective universities. Allowing space for the craft to be respected, this series also allows students and those in the community to ask questions about specific works, processes, and so much more.

This week: Derrick Harriell

Growing up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and then moving to Oxford, Mississippi, Derrick Harriell writes about his understanding and exploration of the two worlds that he has become so familiar with. As a natural storyteller, Derrick Harriell pulls his listeners in with his smooth voice and ability to capture an audience through his poetry.

Who’s next: Karen Bender

With an accomplished list of published works, Karen Bender focuses on novels and short stories. Having received many accolades, her craft truly speaks for itself. Presently, Karen Bender is a Visiting Distinguished Professor of Creative Writing at Hollins University in Virginia. BACHE is excited to welcome her for the week of October 23rd.
