Mayor Bell, Randall Woodfin head to runoff in Birmingham city election

It’s down to former Birmingham School Board president Randall Woodfin and incumbent Mayor William Bell in an October 3 runoff for Birmingham’s next mayor.

According to WIAT, Woodfin came in with 40.8% of the vote to Bell’s 36.5%. Birmingham contractor and former Auburn wide receiver Chris Woods came in third place with 18.15%.

Voter turnout for yesterday’s municipal elections sat at 27%, with 38,448 votes cast. That’s up from 2013, with voter turnout at 21%. According to population projections via Bhamwiki and census reports, a little over 212,000 people reside within city limits.

Most districts saw their incumbents retain their seats, except for District 2, District 5 and District 9. Those districts will have runoffs.

Lashunda Scales (incumbent): 69%

District 2 (Runoff between Williams and Rafferty)
Hunter Williams 29%
Kim Rafferty 17%

District 3
Valerie Abbott (incumbent) 65%

District 4
William Parker (incumbent) 74%

District 5 (Runoff between Austin and O’Quinn)
Johnathan Austin (incumbent) 31%
Darrell O’Quinn 26%

District 6
Sheila Tyson (incumbent) 80%

District 7
Jay Roberson (incumbent) 58%

District 8
Steven Hoyt (incumbent) 58%

District 9 (Runoff between Royal and Hilliard)
Roderick Royal 31%
John Hilliard 22%

Birmingham School Board Election Winners

All nine seats were up for election, and the races drew 31 candidates, including four incumbents, seven former candidates and one former board member. Districts 3, 6 and 9 had outright winners. They include: Mary Boehm (District 3), Cheri Gardner (District 6) and Sandra Brown (District 9).

All of the other races will be decided in the Oct. 3 runoff, except for District 2. In District 2, Brandon McCray and Terri Michal each finished with 50 percent of the vote. There will be a recount and more than likely, a runoff.
