Small Business Monday – Spotlight on Ferrill African Wear
Reading time: 2 minutes
Shirley Ferrill, a native of Sylacauga Alabama and sole proprietor of Ferrill African Wear, has lived in Birmingham since 1987. Ferrill’s store, in Historic Ensley, is nestled into the second story at 610 1/2 19th Street, 35218. Customers are welcomed with vivid colors, rich patterns, and, most obviously, Shirley’s contagious smile.
Ferrill’s African Wear specializes in traditional authentic African wear for men, women and children. The extensive collection of products is imported from Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal and Gambia.
Shirley explains that her biggest thrill is providing information about African culture along with the beautiful fashions. She even curates Facebook pages related to African culture and the African diaspora in South America.
When asked about what makes her hopeful about Birmingham, Ferrill replied, “I’m delighted that our youth are seeking African wear, history and culture.” Shirley loves African head wraps and enjoys giving demonstrations on various techniques. “About the head wraps, I just tell people to wrap it until you feel pretty! That’s what’s most important.”
While she enjoys building networks with African designers, Shirley has set a personal goal of establishing even more connections and partnerships with them in the near future.
