Tickets for Alys Stephens Center 2017-2018 season go on sale Wednesday

Have you checked out this season’s lineup for UAB’s Alys Stephens Center? It’s a stellar mix of music, dance and more. Tickets for all new shows go on sale to the general public starting May 17!

I am stoked for the chance to see Sheila-E, mainly because she is a bad ramma jamma and all-around awesome lady. Rolling Stone rates her as one of the “100 Greatest Drummers Of All Time.” Also, her 1984 hit “The Glamorous Life” pretty much makes it onto all of my travel and party mixes. Did you know that she played with Marvin Gaye in 1983, before her Prince days?

She once told Fox News that she was the one to teach Prince a few things. That is my kind of woman.

“It’s pretty interesting everyone says how [Prince] influenced me, but actually I influenced him first,” she said.

Who Else?

Other huge names like Emmylou Harris (another favorite of mine), Robert Cray, Bruce Hornsby, Dionne Warwick, Maceo Parker and Yo-Yo Ma top the list of musicians performing for the new season. That is one impressive lineup, my fellow Birmingham Nowers.

More Than Music

When it comes to dance,  you can’t beat acts like the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and Ballet Ballet Hispánico. According to The Washington Post, “The members of Ballet Hispánico are 12 of the most technically accomplished and musical dancers you’ll find in the contemporary sphere.”  Real feats of the human body going on with these folks. Their performances are sure to be radiant, alluring and not to be missed.

While I’m on the subject of what’s not to be missed, the final leg of the Center’s 2017 lineup is pretty grand, too. Jonny Lang will be there on June 10, followed by the acclaimed play, “Somebody Done Bombed the 16th Street Baptist Church”.
