The AP School Honor Roll has released its annual list of top performing public high schools across the nation. Of the 27 Alabama schools that made the list this year, 12 schools are located in the Birmingham area.

Which Birmingham area schools made the list?
The Advanced Placement Program (AP) allows high school students to get an early start on college-level classes. This means that students can begin building the academic skills and habits that prepare them for higher education.
Schools can earn a spot on the AP School Honor Roll by exhibiting increased college and career-readiness, high test scores and classroom achievement. Here are the 12 Birmingham area schools that excelled in 2023:
- Alabama School of Fine Arts
- Chelsea High School
- Jefferson County IB School
- Helena High School
- Homewood High School
- Hoover High School
- Hewitt-Trussville High School
- Oak Mountain High School
- Spain Park High School
- Vestavia Hills High School
- Mountain Brook High School
- Thompson High School
Of these 12 schools, only one earned the AP’s prestigious Platinum tier distinction—Jefferson County IB School.
