The exhibition will be on view from February 23 – April 17\, 2026\, at Space One Eleven\, 2407 Second Avenue North in Birmingham. An opening reception will be held Thursday\, February 19\, from 5:30 to 7:00 pm.  \nJosé Villalobos is a multidisciplinary artist exploring identity\, queerness\, and cultural heritage through sculpture\, performance\, and installation. Growing up between El Paso\, Texas\, and Ciudad Juárez\, Mexico\, he confronts the conflicts between tradition\, faith\, and sexuality within Mexican and American cultures. Rooted in personal experience\, his practice challenges machismo and the violence of assimilation\, transforming materials and symbols to reclaim queer visibility. Villalobos has exhibited nationally and internationally and is a recipient of the Joan Mitchell Painters & Sculptors Grant. Recently he became a Trellis Art Fund Stepping Stone. Fellow. His work affirms resilience\, tenderness\, and the power of self-expression within queer and borderland communities. \nFor the exhibition “Navegando la Masculinidad de la Frontera / Navigating the Border’s Masculinity\,” Villalobos presents a collection of new and past works that create a dialogue about masculinities within Norteño culture\, its subcultural predecessors\, and related historical movements. Villalobos’ aesthetic often combines the rugged iconography of the West (boots\, cowboy hats\, leather\, ropes) with the flamboyance\, glitter\, and vulnerability of queer expression. The result is a powerful tension: the imagery of strength\, control\, even violence (e.g.\, rodeo\, bull-taming) juxtaposed with fragility\, costume play\, and critique of the structures that define “manhood.” \nSpace One Eleven (SOE) is a nonprofit contemporary art space in Birmingham\, Alabama. For four decades\, SOE has championed practicing artists and provided arts education to children and youth. Get Healthy on the Railroad is a series of exercise and cooking classes offered at Railroad Park from April 1 through October 31. This FREE program is sponsored by The Caring Foundation and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama and serves thousands of individuals each year. \nIn 2026\, we’ll offer nine exercise classes each week and monthly cooking classes will take place on select Sundays from April through October. \nGet Healthy evening exercise classes take place Monday through Friday from 6pm to 7pm. The complete evening lineup includes Boxing Aerobics\, Hip Hop Cardio\, Zumba\, Yoga\, and Line Dancing. \nOur Senior Fit classes are low-impact workouts designed to boost strength and balance and will take place every Tuesday and Friday at 8am with the addition of a Saturday Senior Fit class at 9am. For the second year a Pilates class will take place on Saturdays at 8 am. \nMonthly cooking classes begin on Sunday\, April 26\, and will take place on select Sundays each month through October. Local expert chefs will offer cooking demonstrations\, food tastings\, healthy eating tips and take-home recipe cards. The first 100 attendees to sign in receive a bag of free produce sourced through Piggly Wiggly so they can recreate each recipe at home. Cooking classes take place on Railroad Park’s Regions Bank 17th Street Plaza and begin at 3:30 pm. SUMMARY:City Center Art Spring 2026 - Studio art classes for young artists in grades 2 – 12
DESCRIPTION:City Center Art is Space One Eleven’s afterschool studio art program for students of all skill levels and is designed to build visual communication skills and foster creative thinking. Throughout the semester\, young artists learn the elements of art and principles of design\, strengthen foundation skills\, and further their understanding of art criticism\, art theory\, and art history. \nTeaching artists balance instruction between creating and responding—young artists make\, discuss\, and write about their work—thereby facilitating a transformative learning experience for young artists. \nSpace One Eleven’s philosophy is to provide an environment in which young artists can learn\, create\, explore\, and forge their own path into the world of art. All CCA young artists participate in the end of year exhibition and open house at the end of the Spring Semester. \nStudents are welcome to join the art class any time during the school year if seats are available. Class cost will be pro-rated for those who join later in the semester.
