SUMMARY:City Center Art Spring 2026 - Studio art classes for young artists in grades 2 – 12
DESCRIPTION:City Center Art is Space One Eleven’s afterschool studio art program for students of all skill levels and is designed to build visual communication skills and foster creative thinking. Throughout the semester\, young artists learn the elements of art and principles of design\, strengthen foundation skills\, and further their understanding of art criticism\, art theory\, and art history. \nTeaching artists balance instruction between creating and responding—young artists make\, discuss\, and write about their work—thereby facilitating a transformative learning experience for young artists. \nSpace One Eleven’s philosophy is to provide an environment in which young artists can learn\, create\, explore\, and forge their own path into the world of art. All CCA young artists participate in the end of year exhibition and open house at the end of the Spring Semester. \nStudents are welcome to join the art class any time during the school year if seats are available. Class cost will be pro-rated for those who join later in the semester.

SUMMARY:Space One Eleven presents two concurrent solo exhibitions: "Time to Make the Donuts" by Nic[o] Brierre Aziz and "Kawii Otinum" by Wendy DesChene
DESCRIPTION:Aziz examines ideas of time\, productivity\, and distraction through layered references to popular culture\, advertising\, and capitalism\, while also addressing difficult histories that continue to shape American life. DesChene reflects the Métis Nation’s cultural resurgence through paintings and sound sculptures that merge Indigenous imagery with Eurocentric traditions to explore land\, memory\, and identity. \nThe opening reception will be held Friday\, October 10\, from 5:30 to 7:00 pm\, with an artist panel moderated by Jennifer McCohnell at 6:00 pm. A community mural painting led by DesChene will take place from 4:00 to 5:00 pm in recognition of Indigenous Peoples’ Day\, and all community members are invited to participate. \nGallery hours are Tuesday through Friday\, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm\, and by appointment. Admission is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:The Art of Woodburning: Exploring Pyrography with Katie Mae Adams
DESCRIPTION:Immerse yourself in the meditative practice of woodburning\, where heat meets artistry to create intricate\, timeless designs. In this workshop\, we’ll explore pyrography—the art of drawing with fire—as a means of expression\, connection\, and creativity. \nThis hands-on experience will guide you through: \nUnderstanding the pyrography tools and how to use them with precision and control.\nExploring various techniques such as shading\, line work\, and texture to bring depth and dimension to your designs.\nLearning how to transfer your own ideas and inspirations onto wood with fluidity and ease.\nDiscovering the unique properties of different woods and how they influence the final artwork.\nWood will be provided\, but you are also invited to bring your own wooden objects—whether it’s a turned bowl\, small wooden carpentry items\, or a piece with personal significance—to imbue it with your own artistic vision. \nBy the end of the workshop\, you will have created a one-of-a-kind pyrographic piece that reflects your creative journey. No previous experience is required\, just an open mind to explore the simple act of drawing with fire. \nThis workshop is taught by Katie Mae Adams\, a local Alabama artist specializing in functional objects and sculpture. Adams holds a Bachelor of Arts from Western Kentucky University and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Alabama\, Tuscaloosa\, where she currently teaches as an adjunct instructor while also running her own fine arts business full time.

SUMMARY:Porcelain Vessels Workshop with John Oles
DESCRIPTION:In this hands-on workshop\, we will explore ways of working with porcelain to create functional and sculptural forms using techniques such as altering\, darting\, faceting\, and slip decorating to take advantage of properties inherent to the material. \nOur focus will be based on the vessel\, though not always in the context of the functional pot\, with an emphasis on creating forms that enhance daily life by showing off the unique characteristics of porcelain such as surface\, color\, fluidity and translucency. The teaching artist will provide a selection of glazes for students to choose from. The finished pieces will be glazed and fired in a cone 10 reduction atmosphere. \nThis is a great introduction to working with porcelain for students who have always been curious about it or those who wish to expand their vocabulary of techniques and skillset. Because of the nature of the material\, it is recommended that students come with some prior clay experience and be able to throw a 2.5lb-3lb. bowl or cylinder. \nThis workshop is taught by John Oles. John Oles was born in Wrentham\, Massachusetts\, and holds a BFA in Ceramics from the University of Massachusetts (1998) and an MFA from Tulane University (2008) in New Orleans\, Louisiana. John taught ceramics at Loyola University from 2008-2013. Currently\, John is Associate Professor of Ceramics at Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville\, AL.
