Friends of Emmet O’Neal Library Book Sale

For more than 50 years, the Friends of the Emmet O’Neal Library have supported the library through its annual book sale, with proceeds benefitting the library’s adult and teen programs.  This year’s sale will begin Feb. 20 with a preview party and will continue with a general sale Feb 21-23.  From a child’s favorite picture book, a current bestseller, or a rare signed first edition – you never know what you’ll discover.  Patrons contributing a minimum of $25 (payable at the door) may attend the Preview Party on Thursday, February 20th from 6-8 pm.   At the Preview Party you’ll get first crack at the 10,000 volumes available during the sale,
including beautiful art and coffee table books, collectible items, and rare titles.  On Sunday, the final day of the sale, books will be half price upstairs and $15 per bag in the basement.

Some of my favorite summertime memories as a child involved going to the library. During those long, hot summer days (before Netflix came around), my older sister and I would run out of entertainment fairly quickly. So, once a week, we would grab our library cards, hop in my mom’s car, and ride down to our local public library. The excitement of scanning the shelves, finding a new novel or maybe the next book in a series I’d been burning through- nothing could compare. I feel confident that I am not alone in that memory. Which begs the question, Birmingham- why have so many of us forgotten about libraries?
