The Volunteer Engagement Team at United Way provides premiere volunteer opportunities for companies, individuals, and families throughout the six-county central Alabama region. Volunteers are matched with meaningful opportunities at United Way and local non-profit partners in need of volunteer assistance, or with custom-designed volunteer projects through United Way Hands On (uWHO).

Responsibilities for the Volunteer Engagement Manager (1) include all aspects of project planning, coordination and onsite execution. This includes management of input and records of the volunteer events. This manager will be proficient with relevant computer software and database management including periodic summary reports. The position interacts with volunteer coordinators and manages issues that arise. This manager is also responsible for internal office management and coordination with team members to ensure smooth operations. This manager monitors the uWHO main mailbox and coordinates responses to requests.

Knowledge and Skills

Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Proven ability to coordinate projects and activities that involve a cross section of people including UW staff and volunteers. Excellent computer skills including Microsoft office products and relevant software to manage volunteer projects.

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree preferred; non-profit experience is desired; experience raising money for nonprofits and/or working in resource development and an understanding of nonprofit development issues and strategies is a plus; successful experience with volunteer management and community problem solving is also desirable.

Working Conditions

This position requires the ability to work when volunteers are available, and projects are scheduled. Managing time wisely and judiciously is needed to balancing field work and office responsibilities.  Volunteer projects are normally scheduled on weekdays, but weekend and nights are part of the ongoing community demand.  During times of crisis and emergencies extended work hours are expected.  Must be willing to work overtime and travel throughout the state as needed.  Must be able to lift 50lbs.

Valid Alabama driver’s license, reliable transportation, proof of automobile insurance to commensurate with state law, background checks to include but not limited to criminal record and drug screening.
