Public Relations Specialist

United Way of Central Alabama, Inc. is looking for a Public Relations Specialist to join our Marketing and Communications team. The ideal candidate will play an important role in content development and brand management to enhance the organization’s public image and promote its mission.


  • General administrative duties (filing, copying, phone calls)
  • Keeping abreast of industry and competitive trends
  • Reporting noteworthy news items and opportunities
  • Assisting in the coordination of special events
  • Working with United Way departments, partners, and agencies to develop media opportunities which highlight and promote United Way’s mission
  • Maintaining media lists and editorial calendars
  • Maintain contact lists for elected officials (local to federal levels)
  • Writing feature stories and media releases for internal and external distribution
  • Assisting with media relations and community engagement
  • Coordinating with Digital Marketing for additional awareness through social media channels

  • Working knowledge in AP style preferred



A bachelor’s degree in journalism, advertising, or communications-related field. Advanced degree in a related field a plus.


Minimum of two years’ experience in an agency or corporate setting and demonstrated proficiency with public relations practices preferred. Experience in social services a plus.


Valid Alabama driver’s license

Proof of automobile insurance commensurate with State law

Normal office hours with occasional overtime and some travel throughout the state of Alabama
