Job Title: Systems Administrator – Trainer
Department: Information Technology
Immediate Supervisor: Information Technology Manager

• Trains patrons, library staff, and city employees on software applications;
• Develops, implements, and evaluates training programs on software applications for staff and patrons;
• Develops, implements and coordinates the Makerspace;
• Documents and updates system configuration and operating procedures;
• Analyzes requirements for new hardware and coordinates procurement with outside vendors as needed;
• Performs technical support and troubleshooting on hardware and software problems;
• Plans, installs, monitors, and maintains a computer network, to include, but not limited to, server and personal
computer development, virtual servers and desktops;
• Performs network management, including VLAN management, switch configurations and cabling;
• Provides on-call support for technological emergencies on designated shifts;
• Keeps Information Technology Manager and designated others fully and accurately informed concerning work
progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of
addressing such problems;
• Attends meetings, conferences, workshops and training sessions and reviews publications and audiovisual
materials to become and remain current on the principles, practices and new developments in assigned work
• Responds to questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner;
• Communicates and coordinates regularly with other staff, vendors, and consultants to maximize the
effectiveness and efficiency of information services operations and activities;
• Performs other directly related duties consistent with the role and function of the classification.
Substantial knowledge of server and personal computer (Mac and PC) hardware and software, to include, but not
limited to, virtual server and desktop environments, automation, security, networking, cabling systems,
communication subsystems and peripheral equipment; Substantial knowledge of the specifications and requirements
of network connections; Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, set goals, and develop an action plan to
achieve them; Ability to analyze complex systems and operations problems, develop appropriate solutions,
implement, and train on corrective procedures; Ability to provide insight and recommendations for integration of
computer systems into the performance of other operations and strategic processes; Ability to establish and
maintain effective working relationships with the Information Technology Manager, department directors,
employees, and the general public; Ability to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing, using
both technical and non-technical language; Ability to document processes, configurations and troubleshooting
techniques; Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written policies, procedures and instructions; Ability to
prepare and present accurate and reliable reports containing findings and recommendations in a logical manner;
Ability to operate or quickly learn to operate a personal computer using standard or customized software
applications appropriate to assigned tasks; Ability to use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions
according to written specifications and/or oral instructions; Ability to perform a wide variety of duties and
responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines; Ability and willingness to
learn quickly and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or
technology; Integrity, ingenuity and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks.
Applicant should possess excellent communication and organizational skills; ability and willingness to give attention
to details and to ask questions when unsure; knowledge of business English, spelling and math; Must be able to
work with minimal instruction and supervision. Applicant must also be able to handle irate patrons in a diplomatic
manner. Essential and marginal functions require maintaining physical condition necessary for standing for prolong
periods of time; ability to carry a bag of books and materials, push a book truck with 50 pounds of weight and
eyesight ability to read computer screen. Knowledge of general library operations preferred.

• Bachelor’s Degree or higher; and
• Two years’ experience in computer and server applications, databases, and internet; or
• Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities
necessary to perform the work.

40 hours per week, including one night per week and some weekends. Starting salary $48,000. Health insurance
plan, life insurance, Alabama State Employee’s Retirement System, 12 paid holidays, 12 vacation days per year.
