2. Auburn + Opelika

Auburn-Opelika is a pretty quick drive from Birmingham, making it the perfect easy weekend trip. Fall football season is the best time to get the full Auburn experience. Stay at one of the area’s many hotels or try out a unique AirBnB close to town.

Foodies—Auburn/Opelika has some of the best food in the state. Here are a few of our fave spots you need to try.

3. Lake Guntersville

Lake Guntersville
Cheers to good ole Lake G. (Matthew Niblett / Bham Now)

Lake Guntersville is a hidden gem perfect for a weekend escape, fall break or a fun day trip. Take a “glamping trip” to The Lodge, enjoy the views at Mabrey Overlook and be sure to save room for some delicious bites from their many restaurants.

There’s a reason LG was named the best lake town in Alabama…

4. Oxford, Mississippi

Your photos could look like this, too. (Visit Oxford MS)

Oxford, Mississippi is filled with exciting things to see and do. The small town has charming restaurants, galleries, boutiques and gift shops. Check out their calendar for upcoming events in town.

P.S. During football season, Town Square has some of the best people watching you’ll ever find.

5. Tupelo, Mississippi

Imagine seeing this sunset… IRL. (Visit Tupelo)

Tupelo is one of my favorite small towns to visit. There are over 160 yummy restaurants, one of America’s most popular national parks and (obviously) it’s the birthplace of Elvis Presley.

Want the full Elvis experience? Stop by Johnnie’s Drive-In and order the king’s favorite fried peanut butter and banana sandwich.

6. Gulf Shores

Gulf Shores
More than just the beautiful beaches. (Gulf Shores and Orange Beach Tourism / Facebook)

Gulf Shores may be a summer hot spot, but its also an amazing place for a fall escape. There are endless ways to make it the perfect trip, including bike trails, beautiful views and good eats.

7. Starkville, Mississippi

Starkville
Head to Lafayette Street in Starkville. (Visit Starkville)

You may think of Starkville as just an old college town, but that’s far from the truth. The hidden gem of a town is full of amazing food, artsy tours and the best live music.

8. Hattiesburg, Mississippi

Visit Hattiesburg
Great for family friendly fun. (Visit Hattiesburg)

There are so many amazing things to do in Hattiesburg. Whether outdoor adventure or stepping it up on the jazzy scene is your cup of tea, Hattiesburg has a little something to offer everyone.

9. Lookout Mountain

DeKalb County
I want to be there right now. (Visit Lookout Mountain / Facebook)

We know a lot of our Bham readers love the outdoors, so next time you’re ready for a weekend getaway, pack a bag and travel to Lookout Mountain. It’s one of the most beautiful spots to:

  • Swim beneath DeSoto Falls
  • Hike through the state park
  • Explore caves
  • Rock climb + zipline

10. Ridgeland, Mississippi

On my travel bucket list. (Visit Ridgeland)

Enjoy miles of walking and biking trails, one-of-a-kind shopping and unique local dining in Ridgeland, Mississippi. This town takes advantage of Mississippi weather and is the dream getaway for anyone who loves the outdoors.

Did you know it’s the steak capital of Mississippi? It’s safe to say the food scene here is not too shabby.
