Downtown Traffic Delays This Weekend

As ALDOT continues work on bringing down all of the bridges on Interstate 59/20, traffic in downtown Birmingham continues to be disrupted.

All northbound lanes of Interstate 59/20 just west of Malfunction Junction will close on Friday night.

Closed Roads

On Friday November 10 the lanes will close at 11 PM and reopen at about 5 AM on Saturday, November 11, according to ALDOT.

This temporary closure will affect motorists traveling from the west into Birmingham.

According to WBRC, the head of ALDOT says they have to shut down part of the interstate this weekend.

You can expect delays east of the I-59/20 and I-65 junction, affecting north and east traffic.

“We have to install a steel beam that will span most of that interchange,” said DeJarvis Leonard, ALDOT’s regional engineer.

There will be traffic signs providing warning information.

Leonard recommends these alternative routes:

  • Get off at Arkadelphia and take Finley Boulevard to I-65 to get back on I-59/20
  • If you are on I-65 North, get off at Fifth Avenue and take that to Red Mountain Expressway

ALDOT says that if it rains, the lane closures won’t happen. Police officers will be onsite to direct motorists.

FYI, the 45 mph speed limit is in effect in I-59/20 work zones.

More Traffic Delays Coming

Friday night’s work continues the replacement of the I-59/20 Central Business District Bridges. ALDOT plans to remove and replace the bridges beginning in the fall of 2018. The bridges will be closed for about 14 months.
