Birmingham stay safe in Irma’s path. Here’s what you need to do now.

Birmingham and Alabama residents have been anxiously watching Hurricane Irma reports and maps over the past couple of days.

And our apprehension has ratcheted up a notch over the last 24 hours, with new models showing Birmingham and Eastern Alabama within the path of Irma.

Above is the EURO model posted by meteorologist Dan Satterfield last night showing the current direction of Irma.  Here is what Satterfield said on his blogpost:

“The Euro model shows a track up the west side of Florida and this puts the entire state (Florida) either in the eye wall or on the dirty and windy side of the storm. The winds are already gusting to 60+ in the Keys and over 55 near Miami. This is not good since the eye is still well over 100 miles away. Irma has a large and powerful wind field.

The Euro continues to be BY FAR the most accurate, even out performing models NOAA developed specifically for hurricane tracking.”

Below is an additional map posted by the New York Times showing Irma reaching Birmingham at 8:00am on Tuesday morning as a tropical storm (this map was updated at 11:00am Sunday morning).

If you want continuous stories and maps about  Hurricane Irma, the New York Times has removed it’s “paywall” – so you can get in-depth stories about Hurricane Irma updated every 2-3 hours.

Another good resource, the National Weather Service Birmingham Facebook page which just posted Sunday morning a tropical warning map for Birmingham (which still under the Tropical Storm Watch) and Eastern Alabama.
