Birmingham is quickly making a name for itself as the place to start a new tech company in the South.  Right now, the United States has more than half a million tech-related job openings!  But how can you find these jobs?  You can always look at Bham Now’s own job posting section, but on June 15th, the Tech Jobs Tour comes to Birmingham!

Problematic

The tech industry, according to the tech industry, has a problem: it doesn’t represent Americans.  But looking at demographics for STEM fields, the perceived problem goes deeper: jobs remain predominantly in line with degrees.

The Tech Jobs Tour aims to change what they perceive as disparity between interest and action.  According to their website, “women, people of color, and LGBTQ people are opting for more affordable and accessible coding bootcamps and online education programs over 4-year computer science degrees.”  This makes a lot of sense: nobody needs a computer science degree just to write code.  You could learn how to make a website in a couple of weeks!  Keeping pace with the emerging data-driven economy through vocational schools makes sense.  And that’s what the Tech Jobs Tour promotes.  “This is about more than jobs, it’s about economic opportunity for all Americans.”
