SUMMARY:Belly Dance Cane Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will focus on dancing with a cane\, also known as raqs al Assaya. This type of dance is considered a folkloric style and was derived from the men’s tahtib\, a martial arts dance that uses long canes. Don’t worry. We won’t be doing martial arts! Raqs al Assaya is flirty and its movements are more grounded. \nWe will work on combos with the cane\, twirling techniques\, and movements that are unique to this style. This workshop is open to all levels but some previous dance experience may be helpful. \nThere will be a 10 minute break during this workshop. There are water fountains available just outside the dance studio. Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move around freely. This class will be taught barefoot but feel free to wear dance shoes or socks with grips. \nThe cost for the workshop is $40 which can be paid the day of with cash\, Venmo\, or Cash App.

A Detroit native\, Huh attended the Cranbrook School\, earned a degree in English from Smith College\, and received a law degree from Fordham University. \nKaren ClantonKaren Clanton is an art professional specializing in framing and fine art presentation and serves as Gallery Director of Four Corners Gallery. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art Studio with a focus in photography and ceramics from the University of Alabama at Birmingham\, where she developed a particular passion for 20th-century art. With more than 40 years of experience in the framing industry\, Clanton has worked with a wide range of artworks\, from pieces of monetary significance to those of deep sentimental value\, guiding clients in selections that best suit their spaces\, collections\, and preferences. The BMA relied on her expertise and services for frames featured in the Monet to Matisse exhibition. She has been with Four Corners Gallery since 2004 and leads the gallery as it enters its next chapter. \nMaggie CroslandDr. Maggie Crosland is an art historian and curator specializing in medieval European art\, currently serving as the Fariss Gambrill Lynn and Henry Sharpe Lynn Curator of European Art at the Birmingham Museum of Art. With more than a decade of experience she has held  previous roles at the Saint Louis Art Museum\, the Art Institute of Chicago\, and the J. Paul Getty Museum. Crosland holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art History from Bowdoin College and a Master’s degree and Ph.D. in the History of Art from The Courtauld Institute of Art in London. She is site-curator of Monet to Matisse: French Moderns\, 1850–1950 at the BMA.
