SUMMARY:DOR: A Romanian Festival
DESCRIPTION:DOR: A Romanian Festival \n3rd Edition — “Rooted in Song: The Village Remembers” \nMusic4Romania (www.music4romania.org) warmly invites the Birmingham community and friends near and far to gather for the third edition of DOR: A Romanian Festival\, held at The Episcopal Church of St. Francis of Assisi (www.saintfrancisindiansprings.org)\, 3545 Cahaba Valley Road\, Indian Springs\, AL 35124\, on Sunday\, September 27\, 2026\, from 3:30 to 8:30 PM. Come spend an afternoon and evening steeped in Romanian music\, story\, craft\, and cuisine — everyone is welcome\, and all activities are free (except the seated dinner). \nThis year’s festival\, “Rooted in Song: The Village Remembers\,” turns to the oral and musical traditions that have carried Romanian village life forward across generations — and across the ocean\, including into diaspora communities like our own here in Alabama. Stories\, songs\, and ballads are the mortar of that village life\, passed hand to hand\, voice to voice\, heart to heart\, holding together everything that might otherwise be lost to time. From a solo violin opening to a candlelit closing\, from festive folk dance to quiet poetry\, the program traces how song has always been the village’s way of remembering itself. \nThrough an afternoon and evening of live performance\, hands-on workshops\, exhibits\, a seated Romanian dinner\, and a short award-winning film\, DOR hopes not only to celebrate Romania’s living heritage but to actively build cross-cultural understanding and connection. \nTo RSVP for the seated dinner ($25/adult\, children under 12 free)\, please click on this link https://www.zeffy.com/en-US/ticketing/dor-3rd-annual-romanian-festival OR email Dr. Alina Voicu at avoicu1970@gmail.com and pay by check made payable to Music4Romania\, mailed to The Episcopal Church of St. Francis of Assisi\, 3545 Cahaba Valley Road\, Indian Springs\, AL 35124. Reservations and payment must be received by September 20. \nFESTIVAL PROGRAM \n3:30 – 4:30 PM – Romanian Tapestry \nThe journey opens with George Enescu’s Lăutarul(The Fiddler) for solo violin\, followed by an interactive country presentation on Romania’s journey from village to world stage — its art\, science\, poetry\, and people. Poet Alina Ștefănescu closes the session with an original meditation on village memory. \n4:30 – 5:15 PM – Featured Performance: Bucovina Folk Ensemble \nThe Atlanta-based Bucovina Folk Ensemble performs traditional Romanian dances and folk songs in full costume\, with audience participation including a Hora — everyone on their feet. \n5:15 – 6:30 PM – Workshops & Exhibits \nAll activities running simultaneously: \n#1. Mihaela Noroc Photo Exhibit \nEnjoy the photography of Mihaela Noroc\, acclaimed author of The Atlas of Beauty: Women of the World in 500 Portraits\, The Power of Women\, and Girls’ World. This year the exhibit features photographs of Romanian women only\, most in traditional costumes — unpublished work that will be part of Mihaela’s next book. \n#2. Sacred Traditions Exhibit \nA close\, contemplative look at Romanian Orthodox heritage — hand-painted icons in the traditional Byzantine style\, eggs decorated with centuries-old symbolic motifs\, and other sacred objects — carrying forward the thread of faith that runs through the whole program. \n#3. Mihaela Laslo Art Exhibit \nA beautiful display of angel art by Mihaela Laslo\, including her “Guardian Angel” collection\, featuring Romanian dress and motifs. \n#4. Folk Craft Table \nTry your hand at traditional Romanian folk crafts — string a mărţișor charm as a token of spring and renewal\, paint a wooden spoon or coaster with folk motifs\, or make a bookmark to take home a small piece of the day. \n#5. Children’s Corner \nA cozy stop for young ones and the young at heart\, featuring a reading of the beloved Romanian folktale Tinereţe fără bătrâneţe (Youth Without Age\, and Life Without Death)\, face painting\, and various arts and crafts activities. \n#6. Romanian Phrase Corner \nA playful first taste of the Romanian language — pick up a handful of everyday words and phrases with the help of friendly guides and printed cards. \n#7. Folk Costume & Dance Workshop \nEnjoy an exhibit of folk costumes\, learn a few basic dance steps with members of the Bucovina Folk Ensemble\, and strike a pose for a keepsake photo. \n#8. Silent Auction Benefiting Music4Romania (www.music4romania.org) \nBid on a curated selection of items donated in support of Music4Romania’s cultural and educational programs\, in Romania and here in Alabama. \n#9. Wild Forever Screening \nSettle in for “Wild Forever\,” Episode 3 of Charlie Ottley’s Wild Carpathia documentary series\, looping throughout the workshop hour for anyone who’d like a quieter seat — a journey through the painted monasteries\, wooden churches\, and living traditions of Maramureș and Bucovina. \n6:30 PM – Poftă Bună (Bon Appétit): A Seated Romanian Dinner \nJoin us for a seated dinner of traditional Romanian dishes\, shared around the table. Featured on the menu will be Ouă umplute (stuffed eggs)\, Salată de vinete (eggplant salad)\, Zacuscă (roasted vegetable spread)\, and Platou ţărănesc (rustic countryside platter) to start\, followed by Mămăligă cu brânză și smântână (polenta with cheese and sour cream)\, Tocăniţă de pui (chicken stew)\, and Sarmale (stuffed cabbage rolls)\, as well as assorted desserts and wine. Cost per person is $25.00\, children under 12 free. \nThe dinner reservation and payment deadline is September 20. Please RSVP and pay at https://www.zeffy.com/en-US/ticketing/dor-3rd-annual-romanian-festival or\, to pay by check\, email avoicu1970@gmail.com and mail a check payable to Music4Romania to The Episcopal Church of St. Francis of Assisi\, 3545 Cahaba Valley Rd.\, Indian Springs\, AL 35124. \n8:00 PM – Short Animated Film: Opinci / My Father’s Shoes (2019\, 18 min) \nAn 18-minute stop-motion short — directed by Anton and Damian Groves and illustrated by Maria Surducan\, winner of Best Film at the Transilvania International Film Festival and Clermont-Ferrand — that carries the day’s theme of storytelling passed between generations into its quiet\, closing chapter. \n8:20 PM – Carrying the Light \nThe evening closes as it began — with violin music featuring Ciprian Porumbescu’s beloved Balada\, a work of longing and beauty. Guests are invited to light candles and carry that light into the night. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFEATURED ARTISTS 2026 \nWe are beyond excited and most grateful to feature the creativity of the following artists on this year’s festival program: \nBucovina Folk Ensemble – Irina Milici\, Garofaș Milici\, Victoria Pauliuc\, Viorel Pauliuc — Facebook \nMihaela Noroc\, Photography – theatlasofbeauty.com \nMihaela Laslo\, Print Art — Facebook \nAlina Ștefănescu\, Poet – alinastefanescuwriter.com \nDaniel Szasz\, Violin – danielszasz.com \nFEATURED SCREENINGS \nOpinci / My Father’s Shoes — Romanian animated short\, Best Film TIFF 2019\, directed by Anton & Damian Groves \nWild Forever — documentary\, Charlie Ottley’s award-winning journey through the painted monasteries\, wooden churches\, and living traditions of Maramureș and Bucovina \nDOR: A Romanian Festival is part of Music4Romania’s ongoing series which aims to present uplifting events that speak the language of the heart\, bypassing any boundaries\, building bridges and uniting people from various backgrounds\, and carrying a message of hope and beauty for the future. Highlights include: \n\nTwenty three dinos including one of the tallest dinosaurs ever created — a Brachiosaurus standing 35 feet high; a 40-foot-long Tyrannosaurus rex alongside its baby; and a Triceratops the size of a food truck.\nTwo dinosaur nests – one with three Oviraptor babies and another with five Maiasaura hatchings.\nAn 8 ft. by 8 ft. dig pit featuring a variety of dinosaur fossils.\nA massive Tyrannosaurus rex photo op area in the Zoo’s Plaza\n\n“The dinosaurs are scattered throughout your Birmingham Zoo to give an authentic dinosaur safari feel as guests enjoy their visit\,” said Chris Pfefferkorn\, President and CEO of the Birmingham Zoo. “The Dino Safari experience features 23 full-sized dinosaurs uniquely created under direct scientific supervision. Unlike other robots\, these dinosaurs move\, breathe\, and roar\, appealing to guests of all ages. Dino Safari and the Dinosaur VR film are entertaining while teaching important conservation messages.” \nDino Safari was created by world-renowned dinosaur authority Don Lessem\, founder of Dino Don\, Inc.\, and advisor to Steven Spielberg on Jurassic Park. Lessem has led excavations and reconstructions of some of the world’s largest meat-eating and plant-eating dinosaurs from Patagonia. \n“We have gone to great lengths to ensure the most accurate dinosaur robots in the world\, and dinosaur fans love them\,” said Lessem. \nDino Safari is included with regular Zoo admission. \n  \nNew VR Experience: Dinosaur: Evolution \nResponding to the growing demand for immersive experiences\, Dinosaur: Evolution expands the reach of Immotion in museums\, science centers\, zoos\, and aquariums worldwide. The movie is available at the zoo for an additional charge. \nSet deep in the Hell Creek Formation at the end of the Cretaceous Period\, the film takes viewers on a breathtaking journey through the rise—and dramatic fall—of Earth’s most legendary creatures. Featuring scientifically grounded storytelling and innovative visuals\, the experience blends education with spectacle. \n“Our goal with Dinosaur: Evolution goes beyond delivering an unforgettable experience\,” said Rod Findley\, President & CEO of Immotion. “We’re blending science and spectacle to create engaging content that supports the missions of science museums and centers—where curiosity meets credibility.” \nThe VR experience was created in collaboration with leading paleontologists\, including Phillip Manning (University of Manchester; Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi)\, who also narrates the film. From feathered Dakota raptors to towering Tyrannosaurus rex\, every detail reflects the latest scientific research. \nMore than just a visual thrill\, Dinosaur: Evolution encourages reflection on evolution\, extinction\, and humanity’s connection to life on Earth—drawing timely parallels to modern climate challenges. You may view the trailer here: https://vimeo.com/1097701935 \nImmotion’s award-winning VR experiences are now featured in more than 125 locations worldwide. \nDino Safari will run from March 4 to November 1 and is included in the price of admission to your Birmingham Zoo when it is open. SUMMARY:Red Mountain Theatre presents Every Brilliant Thing at High Dive HiFi Lounge
DESCRIPTION:Straight from Broadway\, Every Brilliant Thing is an immersive theatre event about hope\, resilience\, and the small joys that make life worth living. It begins as a young girl’s handwritten list of things to cheer up her despondent mother … ice cream and the color yellow … and grows into her lifelong\, moving record of what makes our lives brilliant. Stepping into the spotlight is Alabama native Morgan Smith\, known for her work in theatre\, TV (Veep\, Messiah\, 9-1-1\, Boardwalk Empire)\, film (upcoming films Babies and The Deli)\, and as the face of Wendy’s in over 200 national commercials. She’ll create this unique experience that melds a beautiful solo performance with audience participation. It’s intimate\, interactive\, and inspiring. \nRed Mountain Theatre will be staging the show in four iconic Birmingham spaces. These curated locations in the heart of our community bring their own personality to the event\, making each experience completely unique. \nJoin Morgan for a heart-wrenching and hilarious night in search of everything beautiful about our world\, in exceptional Birmingham sites\, surrounded by a community of theatre lovers.

SUMMARY:Dino Safari – March 4 to November 1
DESCRIPTION:Your Birmingham Zoo is excited to announce Dino Safari will stomp\, roar\, and rumble into the Zoo beginning March 4\, running through November 1\, 2026. This larger-than-life prehistoric adventure will feature some of the world’s biggest and most scientifically accurate robotic dinosaurs roaming throughout the Zoo grounds. \nAs part of this immersive experience\, guests can also enjoy the new VR movie\, Dinosaur: Evolution\, transporting audiences 65 million years into the past. \n       \nA Prehistoric Adventure Awaits \nTravel back in time and encounter roaring\, breathing giants scattered throughout the Zoo to create an authentic dinosaur safari feel. Closed Mondays and Tuesday except for major holidays. \n      \nADOPT-A-DINO  \nJoin in the fun: Adopt-A-Dinosaur today and display your name on “your” dino for the run of the exhibit! This is ideal for companies\, organizations or families and will be seen by hundreds of thousands of visitors. To Adopt -a-Dino and support your Zoo\, contact Kristin Martin at (205)909-4560 or kmartin@birminghamzoo.com.
