DESCRIPTION:The LaVona Rushton Concert Series is a prestigious celebration of classical music. Each year\, this program showcases world-renowned pianists\, hand-picked in collaboration with the Cliburn\, an organization dedicated to advancing classical music in competitions\, concerts\, and education. This year\, the BMA is delighted to present Vitaly Starikov. \nAbout the Performer \nRussian/Israeli pianist Vitaly Starikov has found distinction with “raw\, deeply felt\, and powerful” (La Scena) performances\, while having an unassuming onstage presence and a “willingness less to play at the audience than to draw [them] into musical intimacies” (Dallas Morning News). His bold approach won him silver at the 2025 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition and the admiration of fans around the globe. Vitaly’s perspective on music is manifested in his repertoire: he presents music that reflects not only tradition\, but also contemporary life\, striving to offer new perspectives on familiar music and introduce lesser-known pieces to wider audiences. His Cliburn performance of Bartok’s Second Piano Concerto electrified the room\, with a La Scena reviewer noting that “he understood this music\, and gave an impactful\, lively\, and gripping interpretation on all levels: emotionally\, architecturally\, and in terms of his sound palette.” This inaugural Cliburn season takes him to the Bravo! Vail and Sunriver Music Festivals; Colorado Springs Philharmonic\, and Pacific\, Topeka\, and Springfield Symphony Orchestras\, and in recitals throughout the United States. This fall the Gardens extends a rare invitation to visit our Toshinan\, one of the most authentic Japanese teahouses outside of Japan. Step away from the hectic pace of modern life and inside the tea house to savor a bowl of tea with hosts Ritsuko Asano and Josh Haynes along with members of the Urasenke Association of Birmingham. In keeping with cultural tradition visitors are required to follow traditional Japanese practices when entering Toshinan (more information at registration). \n\nSince the tea ceremony will take place on the tatami floor\, we kindly request that you refrain from wearing jeans. Please wear pants or skirts that cover your knees. Kimonos are also welcome.\nShoes are not permitted in the tea house; please wear new\, white socks.\nTo ensure everyone can enjoy the aroma of matcha\, please refrain from wearing perfumes or cologne.\nPlease remove accessories such as watches\, rings\, bracelets\, and facial piercings to avoid scratching the tea sets.\nYou will sit on your knees or sit cross-legged for the ceremony so dress comfortably. Curley’s soulful\, bluesy vocals and the band’s hard driving zydeco beat blend to create their unique style of zydeco and blues that keeps audiences dancing. It’s always a party when Zydeco Trouble comes to town. \nLouisiana native Curley Taylor has been around music all his life. Born into a musical family\, drums were Curley’s first instrument when he began his professional career at age 16 by playing drums in his father’s band\, Jude Taylor and the Burning Flames\, a band deep in Louisiana Blues\, Soul and Zydeco. At a young age\, Curley had played drums with some of Louisiana’s musical legends\, including: CC Adcock\, Steve Riley\, John Hart\, “L’il” Bob and the Lollipops\, and his uncles\, “L’il” Buck Senegal and Wayne “Blue” Burns. He toured with CJ Chenier\, son of Clifton Chenier (aka the “King of Zydeco”)\, who is a Zydeco legend in his own right. While traveling with CJ Chenier’s band\, Curley became interested in playing the accordion\, learned to play\, and formed Curley Taylor & Zydeco Trouble in 2003. \nThe band tours extensively throughout the US\, playing festivals and clubs from New York to San Diego and from Florida to Seattle. The riparian forest is beautiful and home to some spectacular wildlife. \nThe Cahaba River changes south of Centreville as it enters the Coastal Plain. As these waters receded\, they left behind sandy soils that were prone to erosion. The edge of this 65 million-year-old sea is called the “Fall Line” in Alabama. It is the boundary between the harder rocks of the Appalachian Highlands and the softer soils of the Coastal Plain. As the Cahaba River reaches these soft soils in the Coastal Plain\, it stretches out and meanders across the landscape\, creating one of the most beautiful stretches on the river. \nWe will camp on Barton’s Beach\, a large sandy beach in Perry County owned by The Nature Conservancy of Alabama. We will have the option for an easy night or morning hike into Perry Lakes Park\, a keystone stop on the Alabama Birding Trail. \nWhat to Expect\nWe will meet on Saturday\, October 18th at 8:15AM at Amped Fitness (3427 Colonnade Pkwy\, Birmingham\, AL 35243) at the Colonnade in Birmingham to caravan to the launch site. We will depart for Heiberger at 8:30 sharp. Join us if you can\, but you may also choose to travel to Perry County on your own. Please let us know your travel plans at recreation@cahabariversociety.org. \nBefore we begin our paddle\, we will set a shuttle to ensure that as many cars as possible are at the take out. That way\, you can begin your drive home as soon as we’re off the water. Trip leaders will provide more guidance for this process on the day of the trip. \nThere is plenty of room for tents at Barton’s Beach\, but hammock sites are very limited. Bring some good walking shoes for the hike. Participants are responsible for providing their own camping gear\, water supply\, and meal prep. Meal plans are available through CRS for an additional donation. This includes lunch and dinner for Saturday and breakfast for Sunday. We are generally off the water by lunchtime on Sunday\, though you might want to bring a snack. \nWhen we finish our journey\, we will pack up our gear\, and everyone with a car at the takeout is welcome to head home. \nGuided canoe trips are weather and water-dependent. If there are changes or cancellations\, Wil Rainer will contact each guest and let you know the plan. \nWhat to Bring\nCahaba River Society provides canoes\, paddles\, and personal flotation devices. Participants are responsible for everything else. \n\nWater (at least 5 liters)\nCamping gear (e.g.\, tent\, sleeping bag\, etc.)\nWil Rainer will communicate about camping gear.\nAll Meals: Saturday lunch\, Saturday dinner\, Sunday breakfast\, Sunday snack/light lunch\nSunscreen\nSun hat\nClose-toed water shoes.
