DESCRIPTION:When: Sunday\, October 12th 2025 from 10am to 1pm\nMeeting Location: Helena Amphitheater – 4151 Helena Rd\, Helena\, AL 35080\nDay of event contact: Zachary Fitzgibbon\nRegistration: Click here!\n\n  \nOn Sunday\, October 12th\, come join Cahaba River Coalition and the Buck Creek Festival team to clean up the Buck Creek Cahaba River Access! Volunteers will meet at Helena Amphitheater – 4151 Helena Rd\, Helena\, AL 35080 at 10:00 AM for check-in. From there\, festival tear down and litter cleanup crews will work their way through the Amphitheater area and Buck Creek. We’ll work until around 12:30 PM before wrapping up to sort and weigh the litter collected. We expect to finish up at 1:00 PM.  \nVolunteers will be picking up litter in Buck Creek and the park area. So if you’re someone who enjoys splashing around in Alabama’s 132\,000 miles of rivers and streams\, don’t forget your water shoes! \n  \nWhat to bring:  \n\nWater (at least 1 liter)\nSunscreen\nSun hat\nClose-toed shoes (required if getting in the creek) \nSmall backpack to carry your items\n\nWhat to wear:  \n\nIf you’re planning to hop in the water\, be sure to bring a change of clothes for the car and required closed-toed shoes (sadly\, Crocs don’t make the cut ). We also recommend wearing clothes you don’t mind getting a little messy!\n\n  \nRegister here!  \nYou will receive a reminder the week before this event with further information. What began as a desire to escape the grind of the music industry evolved into a passion for bringing people together through the power of drumming. \n“I wanted the focus to be on empowerment\, inclusion\, motivation\, and inspiration through rhythm\,” he explained. And that’s exactly what the Community Drum Jam at City Walk BHAM has become—a place where rhythm serves as a universal language that transcends barriers. \nA Jam for Everyone \nThe Community Drum Jam (CDJ) is exactly what the name suggests—a communal\, interactive drumming experience open to all. It’s not a performance or a class\, but a shared moment where people from every background\, age group\, and ability level gather to connect on a basic human level through rhythm. \n“Rhythm is a UNIVERSAL language\,” he emphasizes. “Once you know where the ‘pulse’ is\, you can interact with it and the other people in the circle.” \nFrom gently guiding participants to shifting grooves to keep things fresh\, the facilitator works behind the scenes to ensure each session flows smoothly—even though it may “look” easy. \nRooted in Birmingham \nAlthough John has led drumming events around the city for over 20 years\, the Community Drum Jam at City Walk BHAM has been thriving for the past two. Originally attempted as a year-round event\, the jam now takes place seasonally—spring through fall—with a particularly magical December session held beside the Christmas tree. \nNo Experience Necessary \nWhether you’ve never touched a drum or you’ve been playing for years\, all are welcome to join. The sessions are entirely free\, and John brings at least 20 drums for anyone to try out. People are encouraged to bring their own instruments if they have them\, but it’s not a requirement. \nSpecial attention is given to young children\, who are invited to explore softer instruments in the center of the circle with the support of a parent. It’s a safe\, joyful space to simply “hit things” and begin developing a love for rhythm. \nA Creative\, Healing Space \nMore than just music\, the drum jam is a form of expression and even healing for many. The agenda\nincludes panels on problem-solving\, citizen leadership\, oral history\, and youth engagement.\nFrom honoring the nation’s 250th anniversary to elevating the voices of young professionals\nshaped by the DMC’s long-running Jean O’Connor Snyder Internship Program\, the day will offer\nrich perspectives on civic renewal and the power of communities. A recorded message from Dr.\nMathews will provide his signature insight on the enduring importance of civic life. Lunch will be\nprovided. \nThe keynote conversation will feature Representative Ginny Shaver (R–Leesburg) and Senator\nVivian Davis Figures (D–Mobile)\, who earlier this year championed bipartisan legislation\nproviding paid parental leave for state employees.
