We will review safety in the outdoors\, appropriate attire\, outdoor activities\, and how to make the most of your experience in nature. This program will include a short guided hike and a group creek walk! Turkey Creek 101 is geared towards our community members who are new to outdoor recreation and is appropriate for all ages. \nNote: Bring comfortable shoes for the creek (old athletic shoes\, sandals\, crocs\, etc.) and a water bottle. The hike will be approximately 1/3 mile on uneven terrain with moderate elevation change. Feel free to pack a lunch and picnic by the falls after the program!

SUMMARY:Sense & Response - Nature Drawing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:As the contemporary art world witnesses an exciting revival in drawing directly from nature\, come join the movement with local interdisciplinary artist Annie Kammerer Butrus as she leads a creativity workshop in this timeless practice. \nThe workshop will begin in the field with Butrus teaching her methods for shadow tracing and blind contour drawing. These exercises focus on the physicality of light as well as intentional studying. While the workshop will include technical guidance\, no technical ability or proficiency is required. The final goal? For each artist to leave with a greater confidence in their ability to visually capture their unique reactions to the natural world. \nEach workshop participant will be provided with a small wire-bound sketchbook\, pencil\, and a Sakura micron pen that they can keep for their own practice. \nAnnie Kammerer Butrus (b. Evanston\, Illinois) is an award-winning artist with an M.F.A. in Painting and Printmaking from the University of Notre Dame and a B.A. from Wellesley College\, where she studied architecture\, landscape architecture and studio art. She exhibits her work in major cities\, galleries and academic institutions. Realized primarily through painting\, Butrus’ artistic practice focuses on the intersection of science\, landscape\, and memory. Her interest lies in how mapping shapes our idea of place and belonging\, how to document change and time\, and how often the source of our interaction with nature is from the inside looking out. Her process employs many series of latex resist and layers of opaque and translucent acrylic paint\, applied in succession to create lines and boundaries. Labor intensive\, the resist application records the act of painting\, allows complete control of the painted surface and then\, once removed\, transforms the painting over and over\, creating positive and negative voids.

And that’s exactly what the Community Drum Jam at City Walk BHAM has become—a place where rhythm serves as a universal language that transcends barriers. \nA Jam for Everyone \nThe Community Drum Jam (CDJ) is exactly what the name suggests—a communal\, interactive drumming experience open to all. It’s not a performance or a class\, but a shared moment where people from every background\, age group\, and ability level gather to connect on a basic human level through rhythm. \n“Rhythm is a UNIVERSAL language\,” he emphasizes. “Once you know where the ‘pulse’ is\, you can interact with it and the other people in the circle.” \nFrom gently guiding participants to shifting grooves to keep things fresh\, the facilitator works behind the scenes to ensure each session flows smoothly—even though it may “look” easy. \nRooted in Birmingham \nAlthough John has led drumming events around the city for over 20 years\, the Community Drum Jam at City Walk BHAM has been thriving for the past two. Originally attempted as a year-round event\, the jam now takes place seasonally—spring through fall—with a particularly magical December session held beside the Christmas tree. \nNo Experience Necessary \nWhether you’ve never touched a drum or you’ve been playing for years\, all are welcome to join. The sessions are entirely free\, and John brings at least 20 drums for anyone to try out. People are encouraged to bring their own instruments if they have them\, but it’s not a requirement. \nSpecial attention is given to young children\, who are invited to explore softer instruments in the center of the circle with the support of a parent. Learn their tips for expanding the types and variety of flowers you grow and extending the season of your cut flower garden. Topics include overwintering\, succession planting\, dahlias\, and more!
