That’s the life-changing reality confronting countless women each year who find themselves unexpectedly pregnant … and afraid. In a country that increasingly considers itself prolife\, but offers increasingly fewer services once that life is born\, women have only weeks at most to decide what to do about their pregnancy. The nonprofit Sav-A-Life provides wrap-around services so that the clients who walk through their doors make life-affirming choices for themselves and their unborn children. \nMay 30\, 8:30 pm – Down Syndrome of Alabama\nAbout one in 700 children are born with Down syndrome. That’s 85 births each year in Alabama. The future for them\, and their caregivers\, is fraught with a variety of worries and stress. Through Advocacy\, Connections and Education\, the nonprofit Down Syndrome of Alabama envisions a state where individuals with Down syndrome are accepted and included for who they are. DSA provides hope and support to each person and their families with educational resources and networking opportunities throughout all stages of life.

This guided canoe trip offers a peaceful and immersive journey through the Cahaba’s calm waters under the glow of the moon and stars. After about an hour\, we will pause to reflect on our discoveries\, share observations\, and answer questions before making our way back downstream to the boat launch. \nThis flat-water\, out-and-back trip is designed for a relaxed and enjoyable experience. Since there is no current to assist or resist our paddling\, we will set a comfortable pace\, ensuring that no one feels rushed or fatigued early on. Participants will put in and take out at the same location\, eliminating the need for a shuttle. \nIn total\, we will spend approximately two hours on the water\, with an additional hour for setup and breakdown\, making the entire experience last around three hours. Participants are welcome to bring their own craft. Please indicate during registration if you plan to bring your own boat.\nRegistration: Click here!\n\n\n\n  \nWhat to expect: \nThis is a paddling cleanup in canoes.\n  \nThe Little Cahaba River winds its way from Moody through Leeds\, eventually joining the Cahaba River just north of Highway 280. Along its journey\, it flows through forests\, beneath urban landscapes\, and into a reservoir. It serves as a habitat for threatened and endangered species\, yet it also faces the challenges of both intentional and unintentional pollution.\n  \nWe will be meeting on Cahaba Beach Rd where we’ll pass out gear and choose our paddling partners for the day. We will set the shuttle before the trip so that your car is at the Siccard Hollow side when we get off the water. This process will take from 20-30 minutes. More details of the shuttle process will be shared at the event. For more information on the stretches of the Cahaba check out the Cahaba Blueway. River segment is dependent on weather and water level.\n  \nCRS will provide canoes\, paddles\, life jackets\, grabbers\, bags\, and gloves. There is no charge for this trip. Folks are absolutely welcome and encouraged to head to the CRS website for donations to offset program costs to CRS.\n\n\n  \nAfter every Mom’s Basement Cleanup there will be an afterparty at Mom’s Basement with drink specials and prize giveaways for each participant! DESCRIPTION:As the contemporary art world witnesses an exciting revival in drawing directly from nature\, come join the movement with local interdisciplinary artist Annie Kammerer Butrus as she leads a creativity workshop in this timeless practice. \nThe workshop will begin in the field with Butrus teaching her methods for shadow tracing and blind contour drawing. These exercises focus on the physicality of light as well as intentional studying. While the workshop will include technical guidance\, no technical ability or proficiency is required. The final goal? For each artist to leave with a greater confidence in their ability to visually capture their unique reactions to the natural world. \nEach workshop participant will be provided with a small wire-bound sketchbook\, pencil\, and a Sakura micron pen that they can keep for their own practice. \nAnnie Kammerer Butrus (b. Evanston\, Illinois) is an award-winning artist with an M.F.A. in Painting and Printmaking from the University of Notre Dame and a B.A. from Wellesley College\, where she studied architecture\, landscape architecture and studio art. She exhibits her work in major cities\, galleries and academic institutions. Realized primarily through painting\, Butrus’ artistic practice focuses on the intersection of science\, landscape\, and memory. Her interest lies in how mapping shapes our idea of place and belonging\, how to document change and time\, and how often the source of our interaction with nature is from the inside looking out. Her process employs many series of latex resist and layers of opaque and translucent acrylic paint\, applied in succession to create lines and boundaries. Labor intensive\, the resist application records the act of painting\, allows complete control of the painted surface and then\, once removed\, transforms the painting over and over\, creating positive and negative voids.
