DESCRIPTION:Put on by the DiscourseBHAM Public Lecture Series. \nThe United States is in the midst of a maternal health crisis\, and Alabama is at its epicenter. The statistics are staggering—but numbers alone can’t tell the full story. Too often\, the voices of mothers\, the ones living this reality\, are left unheard. \nIn this powerful and thought-provoking talk\, social worker Dr. Haley Beech moves beyond the data\, using poetry to illuminate the personal experiences behind the numbers. Through verse and storytelling\, she invites us to listen—to truly hear—the stories that statistics can’t capture. This is more than a lecture; it’s an opportunity to engage with the lived realities of pregnant people in Alabama\, to reflect on the urgency of the crisis\, and to recognize the power of personal narratives in shaping change. Women have powerful stories to tell. We just need to be open to hearing them. \nDr. Haley Beech is an adjunct instructor at the University of Alabama Honors College. She earned her PhD in social work in 2023 and her Master’s in social work in 2013 from the University of Alabama. A licensed master social worker\, Haley provides perinatal mental health services at Taproot Therapy Collective. Her passion for this work is rooted in her lived experiences and the many untold stories of mothers’ trauma before\, during\, and after childbirth. Haley is a social worker\, feminist writer\, researcher\, poet\, mother\, partner\, and friend. She lives in Alabaster\, Alabama\, with her two children and miniature schnauzer.

Alex Cuba is a Cuban singer-songwriter\, composer\, multi-instrumentalist and producer based in Canada\, whose work is distinguished by the avant-garde and multicultural nature of his sound. Their songs subvert what we traditionally recognize as Cuban music\, by creatively mixing elements of various musical genres\, such as jazz\, pop\, funk with Latin American popular tradition. All this global mix of sounds is accompanied by lyrics of the highest poetic flight. Throughout his career and with 9 albums to his name\, Alex has won two Juno awards\, four Latin Grammys\, and in 2022 a Grammy for Best Latin Pop Album as an artist\, producer\, and engineer\, in what was his fourth nomination the same. By renouncing the conventional stereotypes that typify much of the Latin music landscape\, Alex is instead defining his own “Latin Soul” genre\, keeping in mind his Afro-Cuban roots\, as well as the melodic and rhythmic exquisiteness of the school of the trova and the son. DESCRIPTION:Three well-known singer-songwriters will headline Trussville’s third annual Heritage Days event on April 4. \nAdam Craig\, Ray Fulcher\, and Jordan Walker are set to play a writer’s round on The Gateway – Trussville Entertainment District stage from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday\, April 4. The event is free to the public. \nCraig has written songs recorded by Jason Aldean\, Dustin Lynch\, Montgomery Gentry\, Parmalee\, George Strait\, Kane Brown\, and Cody Johnson\, among others. His first hit song\, “Close Your Eyes\,” was recorded by Parmalee\, after which Craig was signed to a record deal with BMG Records. His single “Just A Phase” charted in the top 30. \nFulcher has co-written six No. 1 songs and has had more than 25 songs recorded by Luke Combs\, along with cuts by Chris Young\, Zac Brown Band\, Riley Green\, Kameron Marlowe\, and Dillon Carmichael\, among others. As an artist\, Fulcher has more than 30 million streams to his credit. Fulcher’s debut full-length album\, “Spray Painted Line\,” was released by Black River Entertainment in 2022. \nWalker\, formerly of the country music duo Walker McGuire\, has had songs recorded by Combs\, Johnson\, Brown\, Cold Swindell\, Jordan Davis\, Trace Adkins\, and Drew Baldridge\, among others. Walker has been signed to Sony Music Publishing Nashville since November 2019.
