SUMMARY:Still Here\, Still Speaking: Birmingham - panel event and town hall
DESCRIPTION:Still Here\, Still Speaking: Birmingham is a series of civic events dedicated to honoring lived experiences of military service\, sacrifice\, and systemic exclusion that have often gone unrecorded. Led by military families from Secure Families Initiative\, this panel event (June 23rd) and town hall (June 24th) will center testimony and lived experience often excluded from official records. \nAs the nation approaches the 250th anniversary of America’s founding\, these events are intended to honor those who have fought to defend our democracy across generations\, particularly those whose service has historically received lesser recognition. Many of the men and women who defended our nation have returned home only to find that they lack full access to the very liberties they fought to protect. Still Here\, Still Speaking will elevate these stories\, educate the broader public\, and spark meaningful conversation about how communities can welcome and support active-duty military and veteran families. \nJune 23rd – Birmingham Civil Rights Museum – 10a-12pm  \nJune 24th – Carver Theatre\, Jazz Hall Lobby – 5:30-7pm  \nThese events are hosted by Secure Families Initiative and co-sponsored by the Urban League of Alabama and Black Veterans Project. Coffee and light refreshments will be provided at both events.

SUMMARY:Everything Is Great! A Town Hall for the People
DESCRIPTION:Part Town Hall\, Part improvised parody. \nReal issues and questions are fielded by comedians playing the roles of absent elected officials in this improvised live game show version of a TOWN HALL! \nComedians have come together to take the reins of the absurdity of our current political moment and create a hilarious and cathartic town hall event. \nAlabama native and internationally touring performer Matt Davis (MattDavisComedy.com) debuts a brand new show that addresses the current moment head on. \nDesigned in the vein of other Fringe Arts Festival shows Matt has produced\, the format combines interactive elements and improvised lines with an almost game show-esque excitement to parody the spectacle and dismissiveness on display between elected officials and the people they seem loath to represent. \nAn expert cast of improvisers (some of the area’s best) are thrown in the game to represent the absent\, empty chair\, elected officials. Through a series of rounds the comedians lend their voice to the missing officials\, and answer real questions and concerns posed by the audience. But! The comedians must toe-the-line that “everything is great” in all their responses. That is\, if they wish to receive points from our host\, Mr. Dark Money himself. The audience\, however\, is here to win\, too! And they boo and jeer on queue\, amid ridiculous answers\, blatant sponsorships\, redemption groveling\, surprise guests\, and other wild happenings. \nAll together it turns our town hall parody into a hilarious evening of improvised comedy\, and real community catharsis!
