SUMMARY:Dragons and Damsels in the Gardens
DESCRIPTION:| \n \n \n\n\n\nEnter into the magical world of dragonflies and damselflies this summer—when they are at their most active! These striking\, agile\, and voracious predators begin life as aquatic nymphs before transforming into skilled fliers\, driven by two simple instincts: to eat and to reproduce. A familiar figure in the Gardens and accomplished nature photographer\, Robley Hood has studied these insects for years. She will walk you to several of her favorite garden sites to observe and learn about the ancient order of Odonata. \nInstructor: Robley Hood\nRobley Hood’s interest in these insects began while living on the campus of Sewanee: The University of the South. After months of observing and photographing “odes\,” she asked the biology department chair for a campus species list—only to learn one didn’t exist. He challenged her to create it\, and she did. Since returning home\, she has begun compiling a similar list at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens. \nLocation: The Hill Garden \n\n\n \n \nBecome a Friend of the Gardens and join us in our mission to protect\, nurture\, and share the wonders of Birmingham Botanical Gardens. SUMMARY:Landscape Foundations: Selecting and Siting Trees and Shrubs
DESCRIPTION:| \n \n \n\n\n\n Landscaping with trees and woody shrubs requires planning\, patience\, and an understanding of how plants grow over time\, some taking many years to reach their full beauty and impact. Join Bob Koons\, a familiar face both in the Kaul Wildflower Garden and at our plant sales\, as he discusses the selection\, environmental needs\, siting\, planting\, and maintenance of trees and shrubs. \nParticipants are invited to bring two or three photos of their yard for small group work. This is a chance to gain inspiration and practical guidance for your own landscape and to get a sneak peak of what will be available at our Fall Plant Sale! \nInstructor: Robert (Bob) Koons\nBob Koons has been a volunteer with Birmingham Botanical Gardens for nearly 10 years. Applying his background in architecture and love for the environment\, he has helped with multiple spaces such as the Japanese Garden and Kaul Wildflower Garden\, even creating a map of the many native plant species there. Passionate about educating people on plants and landscape design\, he has been leading the Trees and Shrubs volunteer growing group for the spring and fall plant sales since 2019. \nLocation: Adventure Classroom \n\n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\nBecome a Member\n\n\n\nCancellation & Refund Policy\nRefunds (minus a $15 processing fee) will be given for Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens programs priced at $25 or more if notification is made at least 10 business days prior to class start date.
