SUMMARY:Gods of the Smoke Machine book launch
DESCRIPTION:Join us Thursday\, December 4 at 6:00pm Cha House for a conversation between author Scott Latta and John Archibald about Latta’s new book “Gods of the Smoke Machine: Power\, Pain\, and the Rise of Christian Nationalism in the Megachurch.” A question and answer session will follow. \nAbout the book: “We are entering a new era of religion in America: For the first time\, fewer than half the country belongs to a church. But within that group\, growing numbers are consolidating in megachurches\, which are amassing social and political power in our age of convenience and easy celebrity. \nGODS OF THE SMOKE MACHINE goes inside America’s largest churches to unpack the impacts of megachurch culture and hear stories from those who have been hurt by their growing influence and power. Combining personal storytelling and original reporting\, GODS OF THE SMOKE MACHINE pulls back the curtain on an insular institution of more than seventeen hundred churches nationwide that is answerable to almost no outside accountability.” \nBooks will be available for purchase and signing at the event. Hope to see y’all there!

SUMMARY:Birmingham Zydeco Cajun Club presents: Curley Taylor & Zydeco Trouble
DESCRIPTION:October 17\, 2025\nDoors 7pm • Show 8pm – 11pm \nAfter leaving the audience at the 2025 Birmingham Folk Festival wanting more\, Curley Taylor and his band\, Zydeco Trouble\, will return to Birmingham on Friday\, October 17th\, and take the stage at the Woodlawn Theatre at 8pm! \nCurley Taylor and the band hail from the heart of Creole country in Louisiana. Curley’s soulful\, bluesy vocals and the band’s hard driving zydeco beat blend to create their unique style of zydeco and blues that keeps audiences dancing. It’s always a party when Zydeco Trouble comes to town. \nLouisiana native Curley Taylor has been around music all his life. Born into a musical family\, drums were Curley’s first instrument when he began his professional career at age 16 by playing drums in his father’s band\, Jude Taylor and the Burning Flames\, a band deep in Louisiana Blues\, Soul and Zydeco. At a young age\, Curley had played drums with some of Louisiana’s musical legends\, including: CC Adcock\, Steve Riley\, John Hart\, “L’il” Bob and the Lollipops\, and his uncles\, “L’il” Buck Senegal and Wayne “Blue” Burns. He toured with CJ Chenier\, son of Clifton Chenier (aka the “King of Zydeco”)\, who is a Zydeco legend in his own right. While traveling with CJ Chenier’s band\, Curley became interested in playing the accordion\, learned to play\, and formed Curley Taylor & Zydeco Trouble in 2003. \nThe band tours extensively throughout the US\, playing festivals and clubs from New York to San Diego and from Florida to Seattle. Recently\, Curley played accordion to accompany Jon Cleary on the song “I’m on the Wonder” on the album\, “A Tribute to the King of Zydeco\,” to honor the legacy of Clifton Chenier\, and Curley played rubboard on the song from the same album performed by the Rolling Stones\, “Zydeco Sont Pas Salés\,” released as a single on June 25\, 2025\, which would have been Clifton Chenier’s 100th birthday. \nMore Information:\nwww.CurleyTaylor.com\nhttps://birminghamzydeco.com/events

SUMMARY:DOR: A Romanian Festival
DESCRIPTION:DOR: A Romanian Festival\, 2nd Edition\n“Confluence: Where Romania Meets the World”\nSunday\, September 14\, 2025\, 4:00 to 10:00 PM\nThe Episcopal Church of St. Francis of Assisi\n3545 Cahaba Valley Road\, Indian Springs\, AL 35124 \nMusic4Romania (www.music4romania.org) cordially invites everyone from the Birmingham community\nand beyond to come out to experience the vibrant sights\, sounds\, and tastes of Romania at the 2nd\nedition of DOR: A Romanian Festival to be held at The Episcopal Church of St. Francis of Assisi\n(www.saintfrancisindiansprings.org) on Sunday\, September 14\, from 4:00 to 10:00 PM! Everyone is\ninvited and welcome! \nEntitled “Confluence: Where Romania Meets the World\,” this year’s festival aims to celebrate\nRomanian culture as part of humanity’s vast cultural organism\, where every tradition both receives and\ngives. Romania stands as Europe’s great cultural crossroads\, and many international influences have\nwoven themselves into a distinctive national identity. From the painted monasteries of\nMoldova—whose vibrant frescoes blend Byzantine spirituality with local traditions—to the Romanian\nlanguage\, a Romance island surrounded by Slavic and Hungarian seas\, Romania embodies cultural\nsynthesis. Shaped by Roman\, Byzantine\, Ottoman\, and Austro-Hungarian influences\, the country has\nabsorbed and transformed each while maintaining its unique character. Every folk melody echoes with\nHungarian harmonies\, every wooden gate bears Ottoman geometry\, every dish tells migration stories –\nTurkish-inspired mici\, Austrian schnitzel becoming șniţel\, Greek moussaka transformed into musaca.\nLanguage weaves threads—Romanian “cafea” from Turkish “kahve” from Arabic “qahwa”—connecting\nBucharest to Istanbul to Ethiopia. The painted churches of Voroneț and Moldovița showcase artistic\ntechniques that traveled from Constantinople\, while monastery walls inspired Viennese Art Nouveau. \nThrough interactive activities including a fun Romania 101 country presentation\, a Romanian language\nsession\, traditional music\, dancing\, literary readings\, children’s activities\, workshops\, art exhibits\, an\naward-winning Romanian movie\, and a seated dinner (offered at a charge of $25/person\, children under\n12 free)\, the festival hopes not only to celebrate Romania’s dynamic cultural heritage but also to actively\nand purposely promote and encourage cross-cultural understanding and dialogue. \nFor more info and to RSVP for the seated dinner\, please email Dr. Alina Voicu at\navoicu1970@gmail.com or text at (205)807-5814. SUMMARY:Lurks Behind Vol. 2
DESCRIPTION:“Lurks Behind Vol. 2” is the second installment in a powerful three-part dance series by Southern DanceWorks that transforms community stories into dynamic performance art. Set in Birmingham’s historic neighborhoods\, this year’s production centers on two of the ninety-nine communities rich with resilience\, pride\, and untold narratives. Through dance\, spoken word\, and multimedia design\, the event creates a living archive of neighborhood experiences\, shaped directly by residents through Heart Workshops: Talking and Moving. These intimate sessions allow community members to share personal reflections on pressing issues such as food insecurity\, housing\, and local identity\, which then become the emotional and choreographic foundation of the performance. \nDirected by internationally acclaimed choreographer Germaul Barnes and created in collaboration with a diverse team of Birmingham-based artists\, “Lurks Behind Vol. 2” redefines how the arts engage with social justice and civic dialogue. The performance blurs the line between audience and performer\, inviting the public not just to witness\, but to reflect on what lies beneath the surface of everyday places and people. By centering local voices and stories\, Southern DanceWorks brings movement to memory and meaning—offering a vision of the arts as both mirror and catalyst for community transformation.
