SUMMARY:Overnight Guided Canoe Trip: Heiberger to Sprott – October 18th and 19th
DESCRIPTION:When: Saturday\, October 18th at 8AM until Sunday\, October 19th at 3PM\nWhere to meet: Amped Fitness at the Colonnade\, 3427 Colonnade Pkwy\, Birmingham\, AL 35243\nDay of event contact: Wil Rainer\, Mobile: (901) 210-7850\nCost: $40 per person\nAvailability: Space is limited.\nYou will need: At least 1 liter of water\, sun protection\, close-toed water shoes you don’t mind getting wet. See below for more info.\nWe will provide: Boats (contact recreation@cahabariversociety.org to inquire about using your own boat)\, paddles\, and life jackets.\nRegistration: Click here!\n\nDescription\nThis 12-mile guided canoe trip covers a stretch of the river as scenic and remote as any of Alabama’s wilderness areas. The riparian forest is beautiful and home to some spectacular wildlife. \nThe Cahaba River changes south of Centreville as it enters the Coastal Plain. As these waters receded\, they left behind sandy soils that were prone to erosion. The edge of this 65 million-year-old sea is called the “Fall Line” in Alabama. It is the boundary between the harder rocks of the Appalachian Highlands and the softer soils of the Coastal Plain. As the Cahaba River reaches these soft soils in the Coastal Plain\, it stretches out and meanders across the landscape\, creating one of the most beautiful stretches on the river. \nWe will camp on Barton’s Beach\, a large sandy beach in Perry County owned by The Nature Conservancy of Alabama. We will have the option for an easy night or morning hike into Perry Lakes Park\, a keystone stop on the Alabama Birding Trail. \nWhat to Expect\nWe will meet on Saturday\, October 18th at 8:15AM at Amped Fitness (3427 Colonnade Pkwy\, Birmingham\, AL 35243) at the Colonnade in Birmingham to caravan to the launch site. We will depart for Heiberger at 8:30 sharp. Join us if you can\, but you may also choose to travel to Perry County on your own. Please let us know your travel plans at recreation@cahabariversociety.org. \nBefore we begin our paddle\, we will set a shuttle to ensure that as many cars as possible are at the take out. That way\, you can begin your drive home as soon as we’re off the water. Trip leaders will provide more guidance for this process on the day of the trip. \nThere is plenty of room for tents at Barton’s Beach\, but hammock sites are very limited. Bring some good walking shoes for the hike. Participants are responsible for providing their own camping gear\, water supply\, and meal prep. Meal plans are available through CRS for an additional donation. This includes lunch and dinner for Saturday and breakfast for Sunday. We are generally off the water by lunchtime on Sunday\, though you might want to bring a snack. \nWhen we finish our journey\, we will pack up our gear\, and everyone with a car at the takeout is welcome to head home. \nGuided canoe trips are weather and water-dependent. If there are changes or cancellations\, Wil Rainer will contact each guest and let you know the plan. \nWhat to Bring\nCahaba River Society provides canoes\, paddles\, and personal flotation devices. Participants are responsible for everything else. \n\nWater (at least 5 liters)\nCamping gear (e.g.\, tent\, sleeping bag\, etc.)\nWil Rainer will communicate about camping gear.\nAll Meals: Saturday lunch\, Saturday dinner\, Sunday breakfast\, Sunday snack/light lunch\nSunscreen\nSun hat\nClose-toed water shoes. This site shows some of the shoes our team might be wearing.\nWalking shoes for an optional easy hike\nPhotography equipment (don’t forget we will be on the water)\n\n  \nRegister here!

This guided canoe trip offers a peaceful and immersive journey through the Cahaba’s calm waters under the glow of the moon and stars. As we paddle upstream\, we will move quietly and attentively\, allowing us to observe the sights and sounds of the river at night. After about an hour\, we will pause to reflect on our discoveries\, share observations\, and answer questions before making our way back downstream to the boat launch. \nThis flat-water\, out-and-back trip is designed for a relaxed and enjoyable experience. Since there is no current to assist or resist our paddling\, we will set a comfortable pace\, ensuring that no one feels rushed or fatigued early on. Participants will put in and take out at the same location\, eliminating the need for a shuttle. \nIn total\, we will spend approximately two hours on the water\, with an additional hour for setup and breakdown\, making the entire experience last around three hours. This is a rare opportunity to see the Cahaba River in a way few get to experience. \n  \nRegistration\nAccess registration form HERE.

CRS guides will help you navigate the access and portages.\nRegistration: Click here!\n\nDescription\nWe will be paddling between a series of oxbow lakes. There are two short portages on this trip. These portages are only about 20-30 feet but can be muddy\, so I recommend close-toed shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty. Oxbow lakes are past river channels that have been separated from the current channel through any number of sedimentation events. These lakes are areas that continue to hold water and can be reconnected with the river after flood events. They become oases of life\, and Perry Lakes Park is no different. There is a vast array of insect\, fish\, bird\, mammal\, reptile\, and amphibian life. \nGuided canoe trips are weather and water-dependent. SUMMARY:Guided Canoe Trip: US 80 to Elam Holly – August 10
DESCRIPTION:When: Sunday\, August 10th\, from 8 am to 6 pm\nCaravan Meeting Location: Amped Fitness in the Colonnade\nBoat Launch Meeting Location: US Hwy. 80 Access\nDay of event contact: Wil Rainer\, Mobile: (901) 210-7850\nCost: $40 per person. Children 12 and under are free. Members\, remember your discount code!\nYou will need: Brown bag lunch\, at least 1 liter of water\, sun protection\, close-toed water shoes you don’t mind getting dirty\nWe will provide: Boats (contact recreation@cahabariversociety.org to inquire about using your own boat)\, paddles\, and life jackets.\nDifficulty level: Medium to Hard: This 12.4 mile meandering paddle is considered medium to hard based on the distance of the trip. \nRegistration: Click HERE!\n\nDescription\nThis section of the Cahaba flows through the heart of Selma Chalk Country\, where we will paddle alongside majestic white bluffs. Around 80 million years ago\, during the Late Cretaceous Period\, this area of the South was covered in a shallow sea. The rock along this river segment is made up of the microscopic skeletons of phytoplankton living in that water body. Continue to keep a lookout for the fossils of Creataceous marine animals such as mosasaurs\, plesiosaurs\, giant turtles\, and shark teeth in the shallows as you paddle! \nWhat to Expect\nWe will be making stops along the way\, but in order to be back home at a reasonable hour\, we will be spending the majority of the day on the water. Another consideration for the difficulty level is the quality of the access locations. US 80 is a rip rap/sand hill that is fairly steep. Elam Holly is a slightly steep sandy hill and a short walk across a sandy beach.  \nGuided canoe trips are weather and water-dependent. If there are changes or cancellations\, Wil Rainer will contact each guest and let you know the plan. \nWhat to Bring\n\nWater (at least 1 liter)\nLunch\nSunscreen\nSun hat\nClose-toed water shoes. SUMMARY:Cahaba Lily Canoe Trip: Cahaba River National Wildlife Refuge – June 15\, 2025

This guided canoe trip offers a rare opportunity to experience the breathtaking beauty of these iconic flowers in their natural habitat. \nThe Cahaba lily trip is one of our more physically demanding excursions\, requiring participants to drag their boats across Caffee Shoals on the return trip to the boat launch. As you step out to pull your canoe\, keep in mind that the rocks can be extremely slippery\, so caution is essential. This is why closed-toe shoes are required for all participants. \nDespite the challenge\, the reward is well worth the effort. The sight of the Cahaba lilies in full bloom is truly unforgettable. These resilient flowers are uniquely adapted to life in swift-moving water. Unlike their close relative\, the swamp lily\, which grows in marshes where its seeds can float\, the Cahaba lily’s seeds sink and settle among the foliated rocks of the limestone shoals\, ensuring their survival in the dynamic currents of the Cahaba River. \nWe encourage participants to bring cameras to capture the beauty of the lilies\, but please remember that we will be in the water\, so plan accordingly to protect your gear. This is an experience you won’t want to miss. \n  \nWhat to Expect on Your Guided Canoe Trip\nJoin us for a guided canoe trip through the stunning Cahaba River National Wildlife Refuge\, where you’ll experience the beauty of Alabama’s longest free-flowing river and its famous Cahaba lilies. \nMeeting & Departure \n\nOur group will meet at 8:15 AM at Amped Fitness (3427 Colonnade Pkwy\, Birmingham\, AL 35243) to caravan to the Cahaba River National Wildlife Refuge.\nWe will depart promptly at 8:30 AM. You’re welcome to join the caravan or travel to the refuge on your own.\nIf you’ll be meeting us at the Cahaba Wildlife Refuge\, plan to meet at Canoe Beach by 10:00 AM.\nBe advised that there is limited cell service in the Refuge\, so plan your trip ahead of time.\nPlease notify Wil Rainer at wilr@cahabariversociety.org of your travel plans.\n\nThe Canoe Trip Experience \nThis guided paddle follows a down-and-back route\, made easier by the river’s unique geology. As we navigate the Cahaba: \n\nYou’ll witness the contrast between limestone shoals\, where the Cahaba lilies thrive\, and deep sandstone pools with slower-moving water\, allowing us to paddle back upstream\, returning to our starting point.\nUpon arrival at Hargrove Shoals\, we’ll enjoy a scenic lunch among the lilies (please bring your own brown bag lunch).\n\nImportant Notes \n\nWeather & Water Conditions: Guided trips are subject to weather and river conditions. If there are any changes or cancellations\, we will notify all participants. Due to the brief nature of the lilies’ blooming season\, it is unlikely that a trip will be rescheduled.\n\n  \nWhat to Bring\n\nWater (at least 1 liter)\nLunch\nSunscreen\nSun hat\nClose-toed water shoes. Sandals and flip-flops are not protective enough when walking through the shoals. This site shows some of the shoes our team might be wearing. Old tennis shoes also work well.\nPhotography equipment (waterproof bags are recommended for any technology)\n\nYou are welcome to bring a cooler for your water and lunch\, but alcohol is prohibited. \n  \nRegistration:\nTRIP IS CURRENTLY FULL! \n  \nRegistration:\nTRIP IS CURRENTLY FULL Email our Field Programs Director\, Wil Rainer to get added to the waitlist

SUMMARY:Guided Canoe Trip: Centreville to Harrisburg – April 6
DESCRIPTION:When: Sunday\, April 6th\, from 8 am to 5 pm\nCaravan Meeting Location: Amped Fitness in the Colonnade\nBoat Launch Meeting Location: Centreville Blueway Access\nDay of event contact: Wil Rainer\, Mobile: (901) 210-7850\nCost: $40 per person. Children 12 and under are free. Members\, remember your discount code! \nYou will need: Brown bag lunch\, at least 1 liter of water\, sun protection\, close-toed shoes you don’t mind getting dirty\nWe will provide: Boats (contact recreation@cahabariversociety.org to inquire about using your own boat)\, paddles\, and life jackets.\nDifficulty level: Medium to Hard: this 13.3 mile trip is considered medium to hard based on the distance of the trip. We will be making stops along the way\, but in order to be back home at a reasonable hour\, we will want to limit our breaks.\nRegistration: Email our Field Programs Director\, Wil Rainer\n\nDescription\nThis 13.3 mile trip begins in the last shoals of the Valley and Ridge province of the Appalachian Mountains and travels through the Fall Line into the Coastal Plain province. In November of 2024\, while paddling this stretch\, we heard a heavy splash. We turned and saw four beavers flying out from their hiding place under a hanging root mat. As the bow of our boat touched the bank where the beavers had been hiding\, another beaver flew out of the cubby not two feet from the bow of our boat. We will get on the water at the Centreville access and get off the water at the Harrisburg access. Harrisburg is an unimproved  \nWhat to Expect:\nAs we begin our trip along this segment\, we will keep an eye out for the “V” shaped rock formation between the island and the left bank. This is likely an ancient weir built by the Native Americans to catch fish. This shoal lies at the “Fall Line\,” which is the last place we will encounter the 250+ million year old hard rocks of Alabama’s uplands. Below this point\, the river’s character changes dramatically. We will notice that the river takes on wide meanders\, bending back and forth\, and the rocky shoals above the Fall Line are now replaced by broad gravel bars and beaches. We are now in Alabama’s Coastal Plain region\, and the rocks here are much younger (80-100 million years old) and softer than those above the Fall Line. Part of Alabama’s vast biodiversity is due to the wide variety of habitat types across the state. Just in the Cahaba River\, we can generally divide the river into the Appalachian region above the Fall Line; the unique geological and hydrological conditions present as in the Fall Line; and the broad\, sandy soils below the Fall Line. Some Cahaba critters prefer to live only above\, some only below\, and some occupy all three of these habitat types. \nThe Centreville access is wooden and metal steps leading down to a broad\, flat bedrock. The Harrisburg access is an unimproved access with a steep hill. Cahaba River Society guides are available to help guests navigate any obstacles along the way. \nGuided canoe trips are weather and water-dependent. If there are changes or cancellations\, Wil Rainer will contact each guest and let you know the plan. \nWhat to Bring\n\nWater (plan to bring 2 liters for this longer trip)\nLunch & snacks\nSunscreen\nSun hat\nClose-toed water shoes. Sandals and flip-flops are not protective enough when walking through the shoals. This site shows some of the shoes our team might be wearing.\nPhotography equipment (don’t forget we will be on the water)\n\nYou are welcome to bring a cooler for your water and lunch\, but alcohol is prohibited. \nRegistration:\nEmail our Field Programs Director\, Wil Rainer (recreation@cahabariversociety.org) with the following information. \n\nTrip name/date\nNumber of people\, specify number of children and ages\n\nMake your suggested donation HERE.

\nMake your suggested donation HERE.

This is a great stretch of river for a beginner to advanced paddler. As with most of the Upper Cahaba\, this is a stretch that you’ll want to catch at the right water level. Paddling this stretch\, we can see the importance of managing the forest in a riparian zone. We will paddle through mostly quiet and remote areas and will see scenic rock formations and bluffs as we move downstream. We will also see some dramatic examples of the heavy erosion present on the Cahaba River. Remember to always be kind to your downstream neighbor! \nGuided canoe trips are weather and water-dependent.
