SUMMARY:Embracing Natives: The Benefits of Native Landscaping in an Urban Environment
DESCRIPTION:| \n \n \n\n\n\nLearn about the many benefits that native plants offer both to the urban gardener and to the wildlife that rely on them in this multi-faceted presentation by Isabelle Bracewell with the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. Isabelle will highlight native plants that are easy to install and discuss how to create urban spaces that are both beautiful and ecologically functional. \nAs a part of this program the group will explore various spaces where natives are cultivated with the Birmingham Botanical Gardens. Garden paths in select areas are uneven. Comfortable shoes are suggested.  \nLocation: Adventure Classroom \nInstructor: Isabelle Bracewell\nIsabelle Bracewell is the Assistant R3 Coordinator for the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. She has worked as a natural resource preservation specialist for the National Park Service\, a restoration ecologist for several conservation nonprofits\, both in Georgia and Alabama\, and an urban forestry specialist. Isabelle now works to promote conservation education\, landscape-level restoration\, and hunting heritage across the state of Alabama and the Southeastern region. She holds an undergraduate degree from Emory University and a master’s degree in natural resources from Auburn University. \n\n\n \n \nBecome a Friend of the Gardens and join us in our mission to protect\, nurture\, and share the wonders of Birmingham Botanical Gardens. SUMMARY:Spring Container Gardening
DESCRIPTION:| \n \n \n\n\n\nCreate a beautiful spring container garden to take home in this hands-on workshop with Gardens’ Horticulturist Terry Phillips. You will learn about standout plants for spring containers and simple care tips\, then design your own planter using the classic “filler\, thriller\, spiller” approach. Please bring your garden gloves! $35 supply fee included. \nInstructor: Terry Phillips\nTerry Phillips serves as the new horticulturist for Kaul Wildflower Garden. He jokes that before he began studying ecology and working at various nurseries around Birmingham\, he could probably identify only poison ivy\, thanks to his Boy Scout training. He has since worked at Andy’s Creekside Nursery\, Shoppe\, and Leaf & Petal. These experiences transformed his “plant-blindness” by helping him become knowledgeable and appreciative of plants. “Native flora and ecology are something I care deeply about\, and getting to work in the Kaul Wildflower Garden is definitely a dream job!” he said. \nLocation: Adventure Classroom \n\n\n \n \nBecome a Friend of the Gardens and join us in our mission to protect\, nurture\, and share the wonders of Birmingham Botanical Gardens. SUMMARY:Got Sun? Grow Food!
DESCRIPTION:| \n \n \n\n\n\nThink you need a big backyard to grow vegetables? Think again! Learn how to grow fresh veggies in any sunny spot—from suburban gardens to patios and balconies. Advanced Master Gardener Karen Mitchell will discuss how to choose the best vegetables for your space and inspire you with easy\, rewarding options for a spring and summer garden. Perfect for beginners and small-space gardeners. \nLocation: Adventure Classroom \nInstructor: Karen Mitchell\nKaren Mitchell retired from AT&T in 2008 after 31 years. She was certified as a Master Gardener in 2009\, and her first project was spearheading the initial planting of the Hand in Hand Children’s Garden at United Ability of Birmingham. She is very interested in growing vegetables (where sun permits) in small spaces\, in raised beds\, or any container she deems fit. In past years\, Karen chaired the vegetable booth at the Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens’ Spring Plant Sale\, and deems herself a vegetable gardening evangelist. Karen also loves hydrangeas and is the past president of the Alabama Hydrangea Society. Concerns for watering hydrangeas and other plants during drought motivated her to install hose-end irrigation tubing with adjustable emitters to water plants at their base. \n\n\n \n \nBecome a Friend of the Gardens and join us in our mission to protect\, nurture\, and share the wonders of Birmingham Botanical Gardens. SUMMARY:Aromi Azaleas – Bred for Alabama’s Climate
DESCRIPTION:| \n \n \n\n\n\nAround 1970\, Mobile native Dr. Eugene Aromi set out to produce superior blooming azalea hybrids that could stand up to Alabama’s heat and humidity. \nIn pursuit of his goal\, Dr. Aromi carried out over 1\,000 crosses and evaluated over 50\,000 plants—of which he selected just over 100 to be named. SUMMARY:Hydrangea Winter Pruning & Propagation
DESCRIPTION:| \n \n \n\n\n\nPanicle and smooth hydrangeas are the two hydrangea species that bloom on new wood and benefit from annual late winter pruning. The pruning methods for these species differ\, each tailored to achieve optimal plant form and maximum blooms. Advanced Master Gardener David Doggett returns to the Gardens to lead a hands-on workshop that will demonstrate the different pruning techniques and explain how plant stems removed in the pruning process can be prepared as hardwood cuttings for easy propagation of these hydrangeas. Participants will take home a 6-pack of hydrangea cuttings they have prepared themselves. Bring your pruners; other supplies will be provided. \n\n\n\n\n\nINSTRUCTOR: David Doggett \nA Jefferson County Master Gardener since 2010\, David Doggett serves as the President of the Alabama Hydrangea Society and gives guided tours of Aldridge Gardens.
