Curtis Hansen\, plant collections manager at the Auburn University Museum of Natural History\, returns to the Gardens to discuss the characteristics used to distinguish these non-vascular plants from one another in the field. Registrants will learn about the evolution\, reproduction\, and unique ecological benefits of some of the oldest and smallest plants on earth as we walk through the gardens to find them. \nLocation:  Adventure Classroom \n\n\n          \n \nBecome a Friend of the Gardens and join us in our mission to protect\, nurture\, and share the wonders of Birmingham Botanical Gardens. Participants will meet in the gazebo in the Kaul Wildflower Garden. You may bring your own field guide. We will develop a waitlist once all spots on the trip are filled.\nYou will need: Brown bag lunch\, at least 1 liter of water\, sun protection\, close-toed water shoes you don’t mind getting dirty\nWe will provide: Boats (contact recreation@cahabariversociety.org to inquire about using your own boat)\, paddles\, and life jackets.\nDifficulty level: Easy to Medium\nRegistration: Click here!\n\nDescription\nGrants Mill to Old Overton is probably the most popular section of the Upper Cahaba for paddling due to its beauty\, ease of access\, and proximity to Birmingham. For the Grants Mill to Old Overton trip\, we will meet at the Grants Mill access 1.1 miles east of the Grants Mill exit off I-459 at 9:00 am.  We spend 5 or 6 hours on the river and get out at the Old Overton access.  We should be done by about 4:00 pm\, depending on water levels. Along the way we will see some remnants of mining activity\, an open coal seam\, and beautifully intact riparian forest. \nWhat to Expect\nThere is the possibility for downed trees that could be inconvenient to maneuver. CRS guides will help you safely bypass any obstacle along the way. The Grants Mill access is a tall\, steep concrete path. The Old Overton access is also steep but much shorter. \nGuided canoe trips are weather and water-dependent. If there are changes or cancellations\, Wil Rainer will contact each guest and let you know the plan. \nWhat to Bring\n\nWater (at least 1 liter)\nLunch\nSunscreen\nSun hat\nClose-toed water shoes. Sandals and flip-flops are not protective enough when walking through the shoals. This site shows some of the shoes our team might be wearing.\nPhotography equipment (don’t forget we will be on the water)\n\nYou are welcome to bring a cooler for your water and lunch\, but alcohol is prohibited. \n  \nRegister here!

DESCRIPTION:When: Sunday\, October 12th 2025 from 10am to 1pm\nMeeting Location: Helena Amphitheater – 4151 Helena Rd\, Helena\, AL 35080\nDay of event contact: Zachary Fitzgibbon\nRegistration: Click here!\n\n  \nOn Sunday\, October 12th\, come join Cahaba River Coalition and the Buck Creek Festival team to clean up the Buck Creek Cahaba River Access! Volunteers will meet at Helena Amphitheater – 4151 Helena Rd\, Helena\, AL 35080 at 10:00 AM for check-in. From there\, festival tear down and litter cleanup crews will work their way through the Amphitheater area and Buck Creek. We’ll work until around 12:30 PM before wrapping up to sort and weigh the litter collected. We expect to finish up at 1:00 PM.  \nVolunteers will be picking up litter in Buck Creek and the park area. So if you’re someone who enjoys splashing around in Alabama’s 132\,000 miles of rivers and streams\, don’t forget your water shoes! \n  \nWhat to bring:  \n\nWater (at least 1 liter)\nSunscreen\nSun hat\nClose-toed shoes (required if getting in the creek) \nSmall backpack to carry your items\n\nWhat to wear:  \n\nIf you’re planning to hop in the water\, be sure to bring a change of clothes for the car and required closed-toed shoes (sadly\, Crocs don’t make the cut ). We also recommend wearing clothes you don’t mind getting a little messy!\n\n  \nRegister here!  \nYou will receive a reminder the week before this event with further information. DESCRIPTION:Feel the Beat: Community Drum Jam Brings Unity Through Rhythm at City Walk BHAM \nOver two decades ago\, musician and facilitator\, John Scalici\, made a bold decision—to step away from touring with bands and instead channel their energy into something far more personal and impactful: community rhythm. What began as a desire to escape the grind of the music industry evolved into a passion for bringing people together through the power of drumming. \n“I wanted the focus to be on empowerment\, inclusion\, motivation\, and inspiration through rhythm\,” he explained. And that’s exactly what the Community Drum Jam at City Walk BHAM has become—a place where rhythm serves as a universal language that transcends barriers. \nA Jam for Everyone \nThe Community Drum Jam (CDJ) is exactly what the name suggests—a communal\, interactive drumming experience open to all. It’s not a performance or a class\, but a shared moment where people from every background\, age group\, and ability level gather to connect on a basic human level through rhythm. \n“Rhythm is a UNIVERSAL language\,” he emphasizes. “Once you know where the ‘pulse’ is\, you can interact with it and the other people in the circle.” \nFrom gently guiding participants to shifting grooves to keep things fresh\, the facilitator works behind the scenes to ensure each session flows smoothly—even though it may “look” easy. \nRooted in Birmingham \nAlthough John has led drumming events around the city for over 20 years\, the Community Drum Jam at City Walk BHAM has been thriving for the past two. Originally attempted as a year-round event\, the jam now takes place seasonally—spring through fall—with a particularly magical December session held beside the Christmas tree. \nNo Experience Necessary \nWhether you’ve never touched a drum or you’ve been playing for years\, all are welcome to join. The sessions are entirely free\, and John brings at least 20 drums for anyone to try out. People are encouraged to bring their own instruments if they have them\, but it’s not a requirement. \nSpecial attention is given to young children\, who are invited to explore softer instruments in the center of the circle with the support of a parent. It’s a safe\, joyful space to simply “hit things” and begin developing a love for rhythm. \nA Creative\, Healing Space \nMore than just music\, the drum jam is a form of expression and even healing for many. Participants include dancers\, hoopers\, painters\, writers\, and more—all drawn to the rhythm in their own unique way. \n“People come for different reasons\,” the facilitator shares. “For many\, this is a healing experience—a release of emotion\, a chance to connect and be accepted.” \nWhether someone is battling illness\, navigating personal struggles\, or just looking for a creative outlet\, the drum circle offers support\, connection\, and joy.
