Around 80 million years ago\, during the Late Cretaceous Period\, this area of the South was covered in a shallow sea. The rock along this river segment is made up of the microscopic skeletons of phytoplankton living in that water body. Continue to keep a lookout for the fossils of Creataceous marine animals such as mosasaurs\, plesiosaurs\, giant turtles\, and shark teeth in the shallows as you paddle! \nWhat to Expect\nWe will be making stops along the way\, but in order to be back home at a reasonable hour\, we will be spending the majority of the day on the water. Another consideration for the difficulty level is the quality of the access locations. US 80 is a rip rap/sand hill that is fairly steep. Elam Holly is a slightly steep sandy hill and a short walk across a sandy beach.  \nGuided canoe trips are weather and water-dependent.
