What began as a desire to escape the grind of the music industry evolved into a passion for bringing people together through the power of drumming. \n“I wanted the focus to be on empowerment\, inclusion\, motivation\, and inspiration through rhythm\,” he explained. And that’s exactly what the Community Drum Jam at City Walk BHAM has become—a place where rhythm serves as a universal language that transcends barriers. \nA Jam for Everyone \nThe Community Drum Jam (CDJ) is exactly what the name suggests—a communal\, interactive drumming experience open to all. It’s not a performance or a class\, but a shared moment where people from every background\, age group\, and ability level gather to connect on a basic human level through rhythm. \n“Rhythm is a UNIVERSAL language\,” he emphasizes. “Once you know where the ‘pulse’ is\, you can interact with it and the other people in the circle.” \nFrom gently guiding participants to shifting grooves to keep things fresh\, the facilitator works behind the scenes to ensure each session flows smoothly—even though it may “look” easy. \nRooted in Birmingham \nAlthough John has led drumming events around the city for over 20 years\, the Community Drum Jam at City Walk BHAM has been thriving for the past two. Originally attempted as a year-round event\, the jam now takes place seasonally—spring through fall—with a particularly magical December session held beside the Christmas tree. \nNo Experience Necessary \nWhether you’ve never touched a drum or you’ve been playing for years\, all are welcome to join. The sessions are entirely free\, and John brings at least 20 drums for anyone to try out. People are encouraged to bring their own instruments if they have them\, but it’s not a requirement. \nSpecial attention is given to young children\, who are invited to explore softer instruments in the center of the circle with the support of a parent. It’s a safe\, joyful space to simply “hit things” and begin developing a love for rhythm. \nA Creative\, Healing Space \nMore than just music\, the drum jam is a form of expression and even healing for many. This week-long event will promote a clean and healthy Cahaba River and engage a wider audience with the Cahaba River Society\, the global anti-litter and recycling campaign\, our partners\, and sponsors.  \nWe will lead volunteers along the channel\, banks\, and riparian forests of the Cahaba River and its tributaries to: \n\nRemove litter and invasive species\nEncourage native wildlife and vegetation\nMitigate erosion impacts along recreational trails\nAdvocate for a clean river and a healthy lifestyle\n\nEach day\, teams will patrol various river segments on foot or by canoe. Participants will learn about the Cahaba River\, its unique standing as one of the most biodiverse rivers of its size in the country\, and the challenges facing waterways throughout Alabama. Come meet us at Sweet Home Spirits at 10:30 AM to caravan to the cleanup location. If you arrive after 11:00 AM\, plan to park along Jones St and follow the flags to meet up with the rest of the group. Be sure to stick around afterwards for some Earth Fest celebrations with live music from local acts\, food\, and drinks. This celebration will be hosted by Sweet Home Spirits and will benefit the mission of Cahaba River Society! \nCRS will provide all of the gear necessary for this cleanup. If you have a favorite grabber or pair of gloves\, you’re welcome to bring them. You may want a small backpack to help carry your things as you make your way around. \nLunch available for purchase from N Yo Face food truck starting at 1:30 PM back at Sweet Home after the cleanup. There is also a hose at the distillery for washing any dirt off\, so plan to stick around for the live music and live fun.
