SUMMARY:DOR: A Romanian Festival
DESCRIPTION:DOR: A Romanian Festival\, 2nd Edition\n“Confluence: Where Romania Meets the World”\nSunday\, September 14\, 2025\, 4:00 to 10:00 PM\nThe Episcopal Church of St. Francis of Assisi\n3545 Cahaba Valley Road\, Indian Springs\, AL 35124 \nMusic4Romania (www.music4romania.org) cordially invites everyone from the Birmingham community\nand beyond to come out to experience the vibrant sights\, sounds\, and tastes of Romania at the 2nd\nedition of DOR: A Romanian Festival to be held at The Episcopal Church of St. Francis of Assisi\n(www.saintfrancisindiansprings.org) on Sunday\, September 14\, from 4:00 to 10:00 PM! Everyone is\ninvited and welcome! \nEntitled “Confluence: Where Romania Meets the World\,” this year’s festival aims to celebrate\nRomanian culture as part of humanity’s vast cultural organism\, where every tradition both receives and\ngives. Romania stands as Europe’s great cultural crossroads\, and many international influences have\nwoven themselves into a distinctive national identity. From the painted monasteries of\nMoldova—whose vibrant frescoes blend Byzantine spirituality with local traditions—to the Romanian\nlanguage\, a Romance island surrounded by Slavic and Hungarian seas\, Romania embodies cultural\nsynthesis. Shaped by Roman\, Byzantine\, Ottoman\, and Austro-Hungarian influences\, the country has\nabsorbed and transformed each while maintaining its unique character. Every folk melody echoes with\nHungarian harmonies\, every wooden gate bears Ottoman geometry\, every dish tells migration stories –\nTurkish-inspired mici\, Austrian schnitzel becoming șniţel\, Greek moussaka transformed into musaca.\nLanguage weaves threads—Romanian “cafea” from Turkish “kahve” from Arabic “qahwa”—connecting\nBucharest to Istanbul to Ethiopia. The painted churches of Voroneț and Moldovița showcase artistic\ntechniques that traveled from Constantinople\, while monastery walls inspired Viennese Art Nouveau. \nThrough interactive activities including a fun Romania 101 country presentation\, a Romanian language\nsession\, traditional music\, dancing\, literary readings\, children’s activities\, workshops\, art exhibits\, an\naward-winning Romanian movie\, and a seated dinner (offered at a charge of $25/person\, children under\n12 free)\, the festival hopes not only to celebrate Romania’s dynamic cultural heritage but also to actively\nand purposely promote and encourage cross-cultural understanding and dialogue. \nFor more info and to RSVP for the seated dinner\, please email Dr. Alina Voicu at\navoicu1970@gmail.com or text at (205)807-5814. Dinner payments (of $25.00 person\, children under\n12 free) must be received by September 7\, check made payable to Music4Romania – please mail to Dr.\nAlina Voicu\, The Episcopal Church of St. Francis of Assisi\, 3545 Cahaba Valley Road\, Indian Springs\, AL\n35124. \nFESTIVAL PROGRAM\n4:00– 4:45 PM – Romanian Mosaic: International Threads\nLearn interesting facts about Romania’s history and traditions in a presentation that will highlight the\ncountry’s culture as a meeting point of different international influences. Information about Romania’s\npainted monasteries\, a Romanian language session as well as a segment highlighting two Romanian\nwomen of great beauty and strength\, Queen Maria and Princess Ileana\, will also be included. The\nsession will conclude with poetry time featuring award-winning poet Alina Ṣtefӑnescu. \n4:45-5:15 PM – Cultural Workshop\, Children’s Corner\, Art Exhibits\, Documentary\, and Silent Auction\n#1: Turkish Coffee Making and Fortune Telling Workshop\nA hands-on interactive experience of the old Romanian tradition of coffee making (which was imported\ndirectly from the Ottoman culture)\, the workshop will guide the participants through the entire process\,\nfrom grinding the beans to making an authentic Turkish brew to understanding the meaningful ritual of\nconnection and hospitality beyond the experience.\n#2. Children’s Corner: Story & Mӑrţișor Time\nChildren and all young at heart are invited to listen to one of Queen Maria’s beautiful children’s stories\,\nread by poet Alina Ṣtefӑnescu and her family\, and also to make a Mӑrţișor or a Romanian braceiet to\ntake home. A Mӑrţișor is a trinket attached to a red and white string that symbolizes spring and rebirth\nand is traditionally given to loved ones on March 1 st as a talisman for new beginnings\, health\, and luck.\n#3. Several of the exhibited photos are part of her newest project\, Romanian Women\, which has not\nyet been published.\n#4. We invite you to bring a box of diapers to donate to our event host\, Bundles of Hope Diaper Bank\, 1430 Reverend Abraham Woods Jr. Blvd.\, Birmingham\, AL 35203! \nPlease dress comfortably because our program will take place in Bundles of Hope’s Changing Station\, which is not climate controlled. During our one-hour show we’ll talk with the leaders of these Alabama nonprofits\, and share clips from our upcoming BUZZ episodes that highlight their inspiring missions. These four episodes air Sundays at 2:00 pm CDT starting Sept. 14 on Alabama Public Television. Until then\, please follow us on Facebook\, Instagram\, LinkedIn and YouTube! Questions: contact BUZZ creator Michael Hemphill by email here. \nThese episodes were produced in partnership with See-It Productions and Tate Hipps. \nFunding comes from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama’s The Caring Foundation\, Robert R. Meyer Foundation\, and Hoar Construction. \nAbout BUZZ in Birmingham: \nLaunched in 2020\, BUZZ airs on public television in Virginia – and on YouTube – and features the great work that nonprofits do in our communities\, and the marketing pros who donate their time and talent to help these life-giving organizations attract more donors\, volunteers and clients to their cause. A native of Birmingham\, BUZZ creator Michael Hemphill brought his show to his hometown in 2023. Follow us on Facebook\, Instagram\, LinkedIn\, YouTube. \nAlabama Public Television Broadcast Schedule \nSept. 14\, 2:00 pm – Children’s Harbor: BUZZ is back in Alabama highlighting and helping four new nonprofits thanks to funding from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama’s The Caring Foundation\, Robert R. Meyer Foundation and Hoar Construction!Between countless doctor appointments and hospitalizations\, life doesn’t get more stormy for families than when a child suffers a serious illness. Thankfully\, Alabama offers them a harbor of hope. Through a fun-filled “Family Center” at Children’s of Alabama in Birmingham and a fully accessible retreat facility at Lake Martin\, Children’s Harbor strengthens families of seriously ill children through refuge\, respite and resources. Offering Children’s Harbor some new marketing buzz is a Lake Martin icon\, John Coley of Lake Martin Voice Realty. \nSept. 21\, 2:00 pm – Canoe Creek Stables’ Light of the World Adaptive Horsemanship: Grieving the death of her younger brother Kyle\, Nicole Tucker vowed to turn her hurt into healing through one of God’s greatest gifts — horses. Through her Canoe Creek Stables in Springville\, Nicole and husband Jake started Light of the World Adaptive Horsemanship to offer help and hope to people of all ages and disabilities\, from children born with autism and Down syndrome to adults suffering spina bifida and depression. Giving them needed marketing buzz to reach more folks in need — and donors to fund their mission — is web design pro Tiara Lavender. \nSept. 28\, 2:00 pm – Iron City Trykes: Special needs children as well as wounded veterans are often limited in their ability to be as mobile as their neurotypical friends and family\, especially if they want to ride a bike. Formerly Birmingham AMBUCS\, the nonprofit Iron City Trykes is dedicated to inspiring mobility and independence through customized therapeutic tricycles. Iron City Trykes started in Birmingham but is increasingly reaching other parts of Alabama including Jasper and Tuscaloosa\, and in this episode gets some buzz from iconic weatherman James Spann. Much of their mission is made possible through partner corporation “build days.” Providing more buzz to inspire more corporate volunteers is social media marketing agency AMD Creative. \nOct. 5\, 2:00 pm – Alabama Task Force 1 K9 Search & Rescue Team: Since the launch of BUZZ in 2020\, Virginia marketing agency 5Points Creative has provided the creative “buzz” for a dozen different nonprofits in just as many episodes. Now 5Points Creative’s operations director Dan Bryan is helping one of his passion projects for which he continues to volunteer: Alabama Task Force 1’s K9 Search Team\, which offers vital recovery assistance not just in Alabama but for other U.S. disasters such as Hurricane Helene in North Carolina and the Guadalupe River flooding in Texas.

SUMMARY:Safe Havens World Premiere & Additional Screenings
DESCRIPTION:AlabamaTV Productions has partnered with Three Wolves Pictures and Mera Film Studios to make their mark in the world of independent films with their upcoming release\, Safe Havens. \nSafe Havens is an independent drama film that revolves around a group of college students as they face life’s twists and turns including domestic abuse\, racial discrimination\, sexual coercion\, and substance abuse. Four friends each attempt to navigate their own dilemmas independently as they soon realize our friends are our sanctuaries. \nSafe Havens will have its world premiere June 14th\, 2024. In a nod to the film’s Alabama roots\, the filmmakers are planning to hold the premiere at Sidewalk Film Center + Cinema\, a beacon for independent film in the state\, in Birmingham\, AL. The Safe Havens World Premiere will be followed by 8 additional screenings over the following two days. Each screening will be followed by a Q&A Session where moviegoers will have the opportunity to gain insight into the film from the cast & crew that worked on it\, but only the world premiere will be followed by a reception where the audience will have the opportunity to socialize with the Safe Havens cast & crew. \nThe Safe Havens Team is beyond excited to be sharing this story with the public and are especially proud to be screening the film here in Birmingham first! They hope you can join them for this celebration!
