SUMMARY:Everything Is Great! A Town Hall for the People
DESCRIPTION:Part Town Hall\, Part improvised parody. \nReal issues and questions are fielded by comedians playing the roles of absent elected officials in this improvised live game show version of a TOWN HALL! \nComedians have come together to take the reins of the absurdity of our current political moment and create a hilarious and cathartic town hall event. \nAlabama native and internationally touring performer Matt Davis (MattDavisComedy.com) debuts a brand new show that addresses the current moment head on. \nDesigned in the vein of other Fringe Arts Festival shows Matt has produced\, the format combines interactive elements and improvised lines with an almost game show-esque excitement to parody the spectacle and dismissiveness on display between elected officials and the people they seem loath to represent. \nAn expert cast of improvisers (some of the area’s best) are thrown in the game to represent the absent\, empty chair\, elected officials. Through a series of rounds the comedians lend their voice to the missing officials\, and answer real questions and concerns posed by the audience. But! The comedians must toe-the-line that “everything is great” in all their responses. That is\, if they wish to receive points from our host\, Mr. Dark Money himself. The audience\, however\, is here to win\, too! And they boo and jeer on queue\, amid ridiculous answers\, blatant sponsorships\, redemption groveling\, surprise guests\, and other wild happenings. \nAll together it turns our town hall parody into a hilarious evening of improvised comedy\, and real community catharsis! Grab your civic-minded friends\, or those you think need to be inspired to get involved\, and meet us April 30th at Saturn in Avondale for what we hope is the first of many wild and funny nights. \nMore info can be found on: https://TownHallShow.com

SUMMARY:Earth Week Clean-Up Series: Perry County – April 24
DESCRIPTION:When: Thursday\, April 24 from 9:30 AM – 1:30 PM\nMeetup Location: Perry Lakes Park\nDay of event contact: Wil Rainer\, Mobile: (901) 210-7850\nAvailability: No limit for availability to walk. Limited availability for paddling. See registration form for availability and waitlist.\n\nDescription:\nCome join us on Thursday\, April 24th for a walking cleanup of Perry Lakes Park\, located about 5 miles northeast of Marion\, AL. With an established trail system\, we will have no problem making our way through the trails of the park to remove litter and some invasive species. We will also head down to Barton’s Beach to clean along the banks of the Cahaba. If you decide to enjoy the entirety of the park’s offerings\, you would likely walk between 2-3 miles at the most. If you are looking for a shorter walk\, the Lakes Loop is around 1 mile and the walk to Barton’s Beach and back is about the same. \nFirst built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1935\, Perry Lakes Park is a birder’s paradise. A series of oxbow lakes long ago separated from the main channel of the Cahaba River\, these waters are still home to an amazing variety of plant and animal life today.  Make sure to leave a little extra time to catch the view from above the canopy at the top of the fire tower. There is room for about 6 at a time on the tower’s viewing platform. \n  \nCRS will provide grabbers\, bags\, and gloves. There is no charge for this trip. SUMMARY:Napoleon Dynamite: A Conversation with Jon Heder\, Efren Ramirez & Jon Gries
DESCRIPTION:This unique evening includes a full screening of Napoleon Dynamite followed by a lively\, freewheeling\, discussion with fan-favorite cast members; Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite)\, Jon Gries (Uncle Rico) and Efren Ramirez (Pedro). \nThe live show – perfect for the whole family — is a wild and hysterical blend of Q&A\, comedy improv\, game show\, and party\, with plenty of audience participation. Come join the fun and help celebrate this wonderful movie classic! \nThe beloved indie classic Napoleon Dynamite was released 20 years ago. Since then\, much has changed; but the characters\, as enduring as they are endearing\, stay in our hearts. \nAppealing to the inner-teenager in each of us\, the story\, and more importantly the dialogue\, makes Napoleon Dynamite one of the most quoted movies of our time. \nNapoleon Dynamite makes us laugh – and laugh hard – over and over again.

SUMMARY:YOU CAN'T HIDE: Comedy with Casey Skinner - April 9 at True Story Brewing
DESCRIPTION:Join us to welcome Los Angeles-based comedian and storyteller CASEY SKINNER to Birmingham on April 9 as he shares his new one man show\, YOU CAN’T HIDE. \n* * * * * * \nThe Cecil Hotel exploded into the zeitgeist in 2013 when Elisa Lam was found in the water tower on the roof\, sparking a flood of internet speculation about its deadly history—countless deaths\, ghost stories\, and serial killers\, like the Night Stalker\, Richard Ramirez. \nThen came the Netflix documentaries\, the American Horror Story season\, the viral deep dives…. \nBut long before the world obsessed over its horrors\, before Elisa Lam’s disappearance\, the Cecil’s darkness was a secret only locals knew. \nAn oblivious out-of-towner\, Casey Skinner\, checked in—only to uncover its past\, present\, and eerie future the hard way. You Can’t Hide is the hilarious – yet unsettling – true story of what happened next. \n* * * * * * * \nCasey Skinner is an LA-based comedian known for his sharp wit and engaging storytelling. He has performed at legendary venues like The Comedy Store and The Improv\, bringing his unique perspective to audiences across the country. In addition to his stand-up career\, Casey has appeared on BRAVO and E! and has worked behind the scenes as a producer on hit TV shows for Netflix\, Discovery\, and MAX. Whether on stage or behind the camera\, he thrives in the art of crafting compelling\, hilarious\, and memorable stories.

SUMMARY:Guided Canoe Trip: Centreville to Harrisburg – April 6
DESCRIPTION:When: Sunday\, April 6th\, from 8 am to 5 pm\nCaravan Meeting Location: Amped Fitness in the Colonnade\nBoat Launch Meeting Location: Centreville Blueway Access\nDay of event contact: Wil Rainer\, Mobile: (901) 210-7850\nCost: $40 per person. Children 12 and under are free. Members\, remember your discount code! \nYou will need: Brown bag lunch\, at least 1 liter of water\, sun protection\, close-toed shoes you don’t mind getting dirty\nWe will provide: Boats (contact recreation@cahabariversociety.org to inquire about using your own boat)\, paddles\, and life jackets.\nDifficulty level: Medium to Hard: this 13.3 mile trip is considered medium to hard based on the distance of the trip. We will be making stops along the way\, but in order to be back home at a reasonable hour\, we will want to limit our breaks.\nRegistration: Email our Field Programs Director\, Wil Rainer\n\nDescription\nThis 13.3 mile trip begins in the last shoals of the Valley and Ridge province of the Appalachian Mountains and travels through the Fall Line into the Coastal Plain province. In November of 2024\, while paddling this stretch\, we heard a heavy splash. We turned and saw four beavers flying out from their hiding place under a hanging root mat. As the bow of our boat touched the bank where the beavers had been hiding\, another beaver flew out of the cubby not two feet from the bow of our boat. We will get on the water at the Centreville access and get off the water at the Harrisburg access. Harrisburg is an unimproved  \nWhat to Expect:\nAs we begin our trip along this segment\, we will keep an eye out for the “V” shaped rock formation between the island and the left bank. This is likely an ancient weir built by the Native Americans to catch fish. This shoal lies at the “Fall Line\,” which is the last place we will encounter the 250+ million year old hard rocks of Alabama’s uplands. Below this point\, the river’s character changes dramatically. We will notice that the river takes on wide meanders\, bending back and forth\, and the rocky shoals above the Fall Line are now replaced by broad gravel bars and beaches. We are now in Alabama’s Coastal Plain region\, and the rocks here are much younger (80-100 million years old) and softer than those above the Fall Line. Part of Alabama’s vast biodiversity is due to the wide variety of habitat types across the state. Just in the Cahaba River\, we can generally divide the river into the Appalachian region above the Fall Line; the unique geological and hydrological conditions present as in the Fall Line; and the broad\, sandy soils below the Fall Line. Some Cahaba critters prefer to live only above\, some only below\, and some occupy all three of these habitat types. \nThe Centreville access is wooden and metal steps leading down to a broad\, flat bedrock. The Harrisburg access is an unimproved access with a steep hill. Cahaba River Society guides are available to help guests navigate any obstacles along the way. \nGuided canoe trips are weather and water-dependent. If there are changes or cancellations\, Wil Rainer will contact each guest and let you know the plan. \nWhat to Bring\n\nWater (plan to bring 2 liters for this longer trip)\nLunch & snacks\nSunscreen\nSun hat\nClose-toed water shoes. Sandals and flip-flops are not protective enough when walking through the shoals. This site shows some of the shoes our team might be wearing.\nPhotography equipment (don’t forget we will be on the water)\n\nYou are welcome to bring a cooler for your water and lunch\, but alcohol is prohibited. \nRegistration:\nEmail our Field Programs Director\, Wil Rainer (recreation@cahabariversociety.org) with the following information. \n\nTrip name/date\nNumber of people\, specify number of children and ages\n\nMake your suggested donation HERE.

SUMMARY:LES MISÉRABLES
DESCRIPTION:Cameron Mackintosh presents the acclaimed production of Boublil and Schönberg’s Tony Award-winning musical phenomenon\, LES MISÉRABLES. This brilliant staging has taken the world by storm and has been hailed as “a reborn dream of a production” (Daily Telegraph). Set against the backdrop of 19th century France\, LES MISÉRABLES tells an enthralling story of broken dreams and unrequited love\, passion\, sacrifice and redemption – a timeless testament to the survival of the human spirit. The magnificent score of Les Misérables includes the songs “I Dreamed a Dream\,” “On My Own\,” “Bring Him Home\,” “One Day More” and many more.
