SUMMARY:Guided Canoe Trip: US 80 to Elam Holly – August 10
DESCRIPTION:When: Sunday\, August 10th\, from 8 am to 6 pm\nCaravan Meeting Location: Amped Fitness in the Colonnade\nBoat Launch Meeting Location: US Hwy. 80 Access\nDay of event contact: Wil Rainer\, Mobile: (901) 210-7850\nCost: $40 per person. Children 12 and under are free. Members\, remember your discount code!\nYou will need: Brown bag lunch\, at least 1 liter of water\, sun protection\, close-toed water shoes you don’t mind getting dirty\nWe will provide: Boats (contact recreation@cahabariversociety.org to inquire about using your own boat)\, paddles\, and life jackets.\nDifficulty level: Medium to Hard: This 12.4 mile meandering paddle is considered medium to hard based on the distance of the trip. \nRegistration: Click HERE!\n\nDescription\nThis section of the Cahaba flows through the heart of Selma Chalk Country\, where we will paddle alongside majestic white bluffs. Around 80 million years ago\, during the Late Cretaceous Period\, this area of the South was covered in a shallow sea. The rock along this river segment is made up of the microscopic skeletons of phytoplankton living in that water body. Continue to keep a lookout for the fossils of Creataceous marine animals such as mosasaurs\, plesiosaurs\, giant turtles\, and shark teeth in the shallows as you paddle! \nWhat to Expect\nWe will be making stops along the way\, but in order to be back home at a reasonable hour\, we will be spending the majority of the day on the water. Another consideration for the difficulty level is the quality of the access locations. US 80 is a rip rap/sand hill that is fairly steep. Elam Holly is a slightly steep sandy hill and a short walk across a sandy beach.  \nGuided canoe trips are weather and water-dependent. If there are changes or cancellations\, Wil Rainer will contact each guest and let you know the plan. \nWhat to Bring\n\nWater (at least 1 liter)\nLunch\nSunscreen\nSun hat\nClose-toed water shoes. Sandals and flip-flops are not protective enough when walking through the shoals. This site shows some of the shoes our team might be wearing.\nPhotography equipment (don’t forget we will be on the water)\n\nYou are welcome to bring a cooler for your water and lunch\, but alcohol is prohibited. \nRegistration:\nCLICK HERE

SUMMARY:Lurks Behind Vol. 2
DESCRIPTION:“Lurks Behind Vol. 2” is the second installment in a powerful three-part dance series by Southern DanceWorks that transforms community stories into dynamic performance art. Set in Birmingham’s historic neighborhoods\, this year’s production centers on two of the ninety-nine communities rich with resilience\, pride\, and untold narratives. Through dance\, spoken word\, and multimedia design\, the event creates a living archive of neighborhood experiences\, shaped directly by residents through Heart Workshops: Talking and Moving. These intimate sessions allow community members to share personal reflections on pressing issues such as food insecurity\, housing\, and local identity\, which then become the emotional and choreographic foundation of the performance. \nDirected by internationally acclaimed choreographer Germaul Barnes and created in collaboration with a diverse team of Birmingham-based artists\, “Lurks Behind Vol. 2” redefines how the arts engage with social justice and civic dialogue. The performance blurs the line between audience and performer\, inviting the public not just to witness\, but to reflect on what lies beneath the surface of everyday places and people. By centering local voices and stories\, Southern DanceWorks brings movement to memory and meaning—offering a vision of the arts as both mirror and catalyst for community transformation.

SUMMARY:(CANCELLED) Mom’s Basement Clean-Up Series – September 13
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED \n\nWhen: CANCELLED\nMeeting Location: Buck Creek Cahaba Blueway Access\nDay of event contact: Wil Rainer\, Mobile: (901) 210-7850\nAvailability: We have room for 22 volunteers in CRS boats. Participants are welcome to bring their own craft. Please email volunteer@cahabariversociety.org if you plan to bring your own boat.\nRegistration: CANCELLED\n\n\n\n  \nWhat to expect: \nThis is a paddling cleanup in canoes. \nThis will be the first time Cahaba River Society has paddled and cleaned this stretch of water in at least 6 years. With the newly opened Flemming Park access\, the Buck Creek paddle is feasible once again. We will paddle about 3 miles down Buck Creek to its confluence with the Cahaba River. The Flemming Park access is about 100 yards upstream of the Buck Creek-Cahaba River confluence. As with much of the rest of the Upper Cahaba\, this river segment is heavily dependent on weather and water level. For more information on the stretches of the Cahaba check out the Cahaba Blueway. \nCRS will provide canoes\, paddles\, life jackets\, grabbers\, bags\, and gloves. There is no charge for this trip. Folks are absolutely welcome and encouraged to head to the CRS website for donations to offset program costs to CRS. \n\nAfter every Mom’s Basement Cleanup there will be an afterparty at Mom’s Basement with drink specials and prize giveaways for each participant! Details will be given at the cleanup. \nWhat to bring: \n\n\n Water (at least 1 liter)\n Lunch\n Sunscreen\n Sun hat\nClose-toed shoes\n\nYou are welcome to bring a cooler for your water and lunch\, but alcohol is prohibited. \n\n\n\n  \n\nA huge thank you to our 2024 Community Partner of the Year\, Mom’s Basement\, for partnering with us on this clean-up series.

CRS guides will help you navigate the access and portages.\nRegistration: Click here!\n\nDescription\nWe will be paddling between a series of oxbow lakes. There are two short portages on this trip. These portages are only about 20-30 feet but can be muddy\, so I recommend close-toed shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty. Oxbow lakes are past river channels that have been separated from the current channel through any number of sedimentation events. These lakes are areas that continue to hold water and can be reconnected with the river after flood events. They become oases of life\, and Perry Lakes Park is no different. There is a vast array of insect\, fish\, bird\, mammal\, reptile\, and amphibian life. Since there is no current to assist or resist our paddling\, we will set a comfortable pace\, ensuring that no one feels rushed or fatigued early on. SUMMARY:Birmingham Zydeco Cajun Club presents: Curley Taylor & Zydeco Trouble
DESCRIPTION:October 17\, 2025\nDoors 7pm • Show 8pm – 11pm \nAfter leaving the audience at the 2025 Birmingham Folk Festival wanting more\, Curley Taylor and his band\, Zydeco Trouble\, will return to Birmingham on Friday\, October 17th\, and take the stage at the Woodlawn Theatre at 8pm! \nCurley Taylor and the band hail from the heart of Creole country in Louisiana. Curley’s soulful\, bluesy vocals and the band’s hard driving zydeco beat blend to create their unique style of zydeco and blues that keeps audiences dancing. It’s always a party when Zydeco Trouble comes to town. \nLouisiana native Curley Taylor has been around music all his life. Born into a musical family\, drums were Curley’s first instrument when he began his professional career at age 16 by playing drums in his father’s band\, Jude Taylor and the Burning Flames\, a band deep in Louisiana Blues\, Soul and Zydeco. At a young age\, Curley had played drums with some of Louisiana’s musical legends\, including: CC Adcock\, Steve Riley\, John Hart\, “L’il” Bob and the Lollipops\, and his uncles\, “L’il” Buck Senegal and Wayne “Blue” Burns. He toured with CJ Chenier\, son of Clifton Chenier (aka the “King of Zydeco”)\, who is a Zydeco legend in his own right. While traveling with CJ Chenier’s band\, Curley became interested in playing the accordion\, learned to play\, and formed Curley Taylor & Zydeco Trouble in 2003. \nThe band tours extensively throughout the US\, playing festivals and clubs from New York to San Diego and from Florida to Seattle. Recently\, Curley played accordion to accompany Jon Cleary on the song “I’m on the Wonder” on the album\, “A Tribute to the King of Zydeco\,” to honor the legacy of Clifton Chenier\, and Curley played rubboard on the song from the same album performed by the Rolling Stones\, “Zydeco Sont Pas Salés\,” released as a single on June 25\, 2025\, which would have been Clifton Chenier’s 100th birthday. \nMore Information:\nwww.CurleyTaylor.com\nhttps://birminghamzydeco.com/events

SUMMARY:Overnight Guided Canoe Trip: Heiberger to Sprott – October 18th and 19th
DESCRIPTION:When: Saturday\, October 18th at 8AM until Sunday\, October 19th at 3PM\nWhere to meet: Amped Fitness at the Colonnade\, 3427 Colonnade Pkwy\, Birmingham\, AL 35243\nDay of event contact: Wil Rainer\, Mobile: (901) 210-7850\nCost: $40 per person\nAvailability: Space is limited.\nYou will need: At least 1 liter of water\, sun protection\, close-toed water shoes you don’t mind getting wet. See below for more info.\nWe will provide: Boats (contact recreation@cahabariversociety.org to inquire about using your own boat)\, paddles\, and life jackets.\nRegistration: Click here!\n\nDescription\nThis 12-mile guided canoe trip covers a stretch of the river as scenic and remote as any of Alabama’s wilderness areas. The riparian forest is beautiful and home to some spectacular wildlife. \nThe Cahaba River changes south of Centreville as it enters the Coastal Plain. As these waters receded\, they left behind sandy soils that were prone to erosion. The edge of this 65 million-year-old sea is called the “Fall Line” in Alabama. It is the boundary between the harder rocks of the Appalachian Highlands and the softer soils of the Coastal Plain. As the Cahaba River reaches these soft soils in the Coastal Plain\, it stretches out and meanders across the landscape\, creating one of the most beautiful stretches on the river. \nWe will camp on Barton’s Beach\, a large sandy beach in Perry County owned by The Nature Conservancy of Alabama. We will have the option for an easy night or morning hike into Perry Lakes Park\, a keystone stop on the Alabama Birding Trail. \nWhat to Expect\nWe will meet on Saturday\, October 18th at 8:15AM at Amped Fitness (3427 Colonnade Pkwy\, Birmingham\, AL 35243) at the Colonnade in Birmingham to caravan to the launch site. We will depart for Heiberger at 8:30 sharp. Join us if you can\, but you may also choose to travel to Perry County on your own. Please let us know your travel plans at recreation@cahabariversociety.org. \nBefore we begin our paddle\, we will set a shuttle to ensure that as many cars as possible are at the take out. That way\, you can begin your drive home as soon as we’re off the water. Trip leaders will provide more guidance for this process on the day of the trip. \nThere is plenty of room for tents at Barton’s Beach\, but hammock sites are very limited. Bring some good walking shoes for the hike. Participants are responsible for providing their own camping gear\, water supply\, and meal prep. Meal plans are available through CRS for an additional donation. This includes lunch and dinner for Saturday and breakfast for Sunday. We are generally off the water by lunchtime on Sunday\, though you might want to bring a snack. \nWhen we finish our journey\, we will pack up our gear\, and everyone with a car at the takeout is welcome to head home. \nGuided canoe trips are weather and water-dependent. If there are changes or cancellations\, Wil Rainer will contact each guest and let you know the plan. \nWhat to Bring\nCahaba River Society provides canoes\, paddles\, and personal flotation devices. Participants are responsible for everything else. \n\nWater (at least 5 liters)\nCamping gear (e.g.\, tent\, sleeping bag\, etc.)\nWil Rainer will communicate about camping gear.\nAll Meals: Saturday lunch\, Saturday dinner\, Sunday breakfast\, Sunday snack/light lunch\nSunscreen\nSun hat\nClose-toed water shoes. This site shows some of the shoes our team might be wearing.\nWalking shoes for an optional easy hike\nPhotography equipment (don’t forget we will be on the water)\n\n  \nRegister here!
