SUMMARY:Lurks Behind Vol. 2
DESCRIPTION:“Lurks Behind Vol. 2” is the second installment in a powerful three-part dance series by Southern DanceWorks that transforms community stories into dynamic performance art. Set in Birmingham’s historic neighborhoods\, this year’s production centers on two of the ninety-nine communities rich with resilience\, pride\, and untold narratives. Through dance\, spoken word\, and multimedia design\, the event creates a living archive of neighborhood experiences\, shaped directly by residents through Heart Workshops: Talking and Moving. These intimate sessions allow community members to share personal reflections on pressing issues such as food insecurity\, housing\, and local identity\, which then become the emotional and choreographic foundation of the performance. \nDirected by internationally acclaimed choreographer Germaul Barnes and created in collaboration with a diverse team of Birmingham-based artists\, “Lurks Behind Vol. 2” redefines how the arts engage with social justice and civic dialogue. The performance blurs the line between audience and performer\, inviting the public not just to witness\, but to reflect on what lies beneath the surface of everyday places and people. By centering local voices and stories\, Southern DanceWorks brings movement to memory and meaning—offering a vision of the arts as both mirror and catalyst for community transformation.

River segment is dependent on weather and water level. \nWe will be meeting at the Bains Bridge canoe access where we will pass out gear and select paddling partners. We will set the shuttle before the trip so that your car is at the Flemming Park access when we get off the water. This process will take from 30-40 minutes. More details of this process will be shared at the meeting location. \nCRS will provide canoes\, paddles\, life jackets\, grabbers\, bags\, and gloves. There is no charge for this trip. Folks are absolutely welcome and encouraged to head to the CRS website for donations to offset program costs to CRS. \n\nAfter every Mom’s Basement Cleanup there will be an afterparty at Mom’s Basement with drink specials and prize giveaways for each participant! Details will be given at the cleanup. \n\n\nWhat to bring: \n\n\n Water (at least 1 liter)\n Lunch\n Sunscreen\n Sun hat\nClose-toed shoes\n\nYou are welcome to bring a cooler for your water and lunch\, but alcohol is prohibited. \n  \n\nRegister HERE\n\n  \n\nYou will receive a reminder the week before this event with further information. SUMMARY:Guided Canoe Trip: US 80 to Elam Holly – August 10
DESCRIPTION:When: Sunday\, August 10th\, from 8 am to 6 pm\nCaravan Meeting Location: Amped Fitness in the Colonnade\nBoat Launch Meeting Location: US Hwy. 80 Access\nDay of event contact: Wil Rainer\, Mobile: (901) 210-7850\nCost: $40 per person. Children 12 and under are free. Members\, remember your discount code!\nYou will need: Brown bag lunch\, at least 1 liter of water\, sun protection\, close-toed water shoes you don’t mind getting dirty\nWe will provide: Boats (contact recreation@cahabariversociety.org to inquire about using your own boat)\, paddles\, and life jackets.\nDifficulty level: Medium to Hard: This 12.4 mile meandering paddle is considered medium to hard based on the distance of the trip. \nRegistration: Click HERE!\n\nDescription\nThis section of the Cahaba flows through the heart of Selma Chalk Country\, where we will paddle alongside majestic white bluffs. Around 80 million years ago\, during the Late Cretaceous Period\, this area of the South was covered in a shallow sea. The rock along this river segment is made up of the microscopic skeletons of phytoplankton living in that water body. Continue to keep a lookout for the fossils of Creataceous marine animals such as mosasaurs\, plesiosaurs\, giant turtles\, and shark teeth in the shallows as you paddle! \nWhat to Expect\nWe will be making stops along the way\, but in order to be back home at a reasonable hour\, we will be spending the majority of the day on the water. Another consideration for the difficulty level is the quality of the access locations. US 80 is a rip rap/sand hill that is fairly steep. Elam Holly is a slightly steep sandy hill and a short walk across a sandy beach.  \nGuided canoe trips are weather and water-dependent. If there are changes or cancellations\, Wil Rainer will contact each guest and let you know the plan. \nWhat to Bring\n\nWater (at least 1 liter)\nLunch\nSunscreen\nSun hat\nClose-toed water shoes. Sandals and flip-flops are not protective enough when walking through the shoals. This site shows some of the shoes our team might be wearing.\nPhotography equipment (don’t forget we will be on the water)\n\nYou are welcome to bring a cooler for your water and lunch\, but alcohol is prohibited. \nRegistration:\nCLICK HERE

SUMMARY:Mom’s Basement Cleanup Series – July 19
DESCRIPTION:When: Saturday\, July 19th 2025 from 9 am to 3 pm\nMeeting Location: Hwy 280 Cahaba Blueway Access\nDay of event contact: Wil Rainer\, Mobile: (901) 210-7850\nAvailability: We have room for 22 volunteers in CRS boats. Participants are welcome to bring their own craft. Please indicate during registration if you plan to bring your own boat.\nRegistration: Click here!\n\n\n\n  \nWhat to expect: \nThis is a paddling cleanup in canoes. \nOur trip will take place on the Cahaba River just upstream of the Highway 280 bridge. There is a low head dam downstream of the bridge that backs up the river for about 3.5 miles. This reservoir is the drinking water source for nearly 1\,000\,000 Alabamians\, about 20% of the state. We’ll meet at the Highway 280 boat launch at 9:00 AM. Please park on the Target side (east side) of the Cahaba River — the same side as the boat launch. Morning traffic on the bridge can be hectic\, and parking here avoids crossing the bridge. You’ll park along Cahaba River Rd — if you’re in the large gravel lot\, you’re on the wrong side. \n  \nCRS will provide canoes\, paddles\, life jackets\, grabbers\, bags\, and gloves. There is no charge for this trip. Folks are absolutely welcome and encouraged to head to the CRS website for donations to offset program costs to CRS. \n  \n\nAfter every Mom’s Basement Cleanup there will be an afterparty at Mom’s Basement with drink specials and prize giveaways for each participant! Details will be given at the cleanup. \n  \nWhat to bring: \n\n\n Water (at least 1 liter)\n Lunch\n Sunscreen\n Sun hat\nClose-toed shoes\n\nYou are welcome to bring a cooler for your water and lunch\, but alcohol is prohibited. \n  \n\nRegister HERE\n  \n\nYou will receive a reminder the week before this event with further information. If you have questions you are welcome to email volunteer@cahabariversociety.org.\n\n\n\n  \n\nA huge thank you to our 2024 Community Partner of the Year\, Mom’s Basement\, for partnering with us on this cleanup series.

This guided canoe trip offers a rare opportunity to experience the breathtaking beauty of these iconic flowers in their natural habitat. \nThe Cahaba lily trip is one of our more physically demanding excursions\, requiring participants to drag their boats across Caffee Shoals on the return trip to the boat launch. As you step out to pull your canoe\, keep in mind that the rocks can be extremely slippery\, so caution is essential. This is why closed-toe shoes are required for all participants. \nDespite the challenge\, the reward is well worth the effort. The sight of the Cahaba lilies in full bloom is truly unforgettable. These resilient flowers are uniquely adapted to life in swift-moving water. Unlike their close relative\, the swamp lily\, which grows in marshes where its seeds can float\, the Cahaba lily’s seeds sink and settle among the foliated rocks of the limestone shoals\, ensuring their survival in the dynamic currents of the Cahaba River. \nWe encourage participants to bring cameras to capture the beauty of the lilies\, but please remember that we will be in the water\, so plan accordingly to protect your gear. This is an experience you won’t want to miss. \n  \nWhat to Expect on Your Guided Canoe Trip\nJoin us for a guided canoe trip through the stunning Cahaba River National Wildlife Refuge\, where you’ll experience the beauty of Alabama’s longest free-flowing river and its famous Cahaba lilies. \nMeeting & Departure \n\nOur group will meet at 8:15 AM at Amped Fitness (3427 Colonnade Pkwy\, Birmingham\, AL 35243) to caravan to the Cahaba River National Wildlife Refuge.\nWe will depart promptly at 8:30 AM. You’re welcome to join the caravan or travel to the refuge on your own.\nIf you’ll be meeting us at the Cahaba Wildlife Refuge\, plan to meet at Canoe Beach by 10:00 AM.\nBe advised that there is limited cell service in the Refuge\, so plan your trip ahead of time.\nPlease notify Wil Rainer at wilr@cahabariversociety.org of your travel plans.\n\nThe Canoe Trip Experience \nThis guided paddle follows a down-and-back route\, made easier by the river’s unique geology. As we navigate the Cahaba: \n\nYou’ll witness the contrast between limestone shoals\, where the Cahaba lilies thrive\, and deep sandstone pools with slower-moving water\, allowing us to paddle back upstream\, returning to our starting point.\nUpon arrival at Hargrove Shoals\, we’ll enjoy a scenic lunch among the lilies (please bring your own brown bag lunch).\n\nImportant Notes \n\nWeather & Water Conditions: Guided trips are subject to weather and river conditions. If there are any changes or cancellations\, we will notify all participants. Due to the brief nature of the lilies’ blooming season\, it is unlikely that a trip will be rescheduled.\n\n  \nWhat to Bring\n\nWater (at least 1 liter)\nLunch\nSunscreen\nSun hat\nClose-toed water shoes. Sandals and flip-flops are not protective enough when walking through the shoals. This site shows some of the shoes our team might be wearing. Old tennis shoes also work well.\nPhotography equipment (waterproof bags are recommended for any technology)\n\nYou are welcome to bring a cooler for your water and lunch\, but alcohol is prohibited. \n  \nRegistration:\nTRIP IS CURRENTLY FULL!
