Limited availability for paddling. See registration form for availability and waitlist.\n\nDescription:\nCome join us on Thursday\, April 24th for a walking cleanup of Perry Lakes Park\, located about 5 miles northeast of Marion\, AL. With an established trail system\, we will have no problem making our way through the trails of the park to remove litter and some invasive species. We will also head down to Barton’s Beach to clean along the banks of the Cahaba. If you decide to enjoy the entirety of the park’s offerings\, you would likely walk between 2-3 miles at the most. If you are looking for a shorter walk\, the Lakes Loop is around 1 mile and the walk to Barton’s Beach and back is about the same. \nFirst built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1935\, Perry Lakes Park is a birder’s paradise. A series of oxbow lakes long ago separated from the main channel of the Cahaba River\, these waters are still home to an amazing variety of plant and animal life today.  Make sure to leave a little extra time to catch the view from above the canopy at the top of the fire tower. There is room for about 6 at a time on the tower’s viewing platform. \n  \nCRS will provide grabbers\, bags\, and gloves. There is no charge for this trip. Folks are absolutely welcome and encouraged to head to the CRS website for donations to offset program costs to CRS.  \nDon’t forget to join us on Saturday\, April 26th at Cahaba Brewing for a celebration and awards ceremony! \nWhat to Bring:\n\nWater (at least 1 liter)\nLunch\nSunscreen\nSun hat\nClose-toed shoes (required)\nYou are welcome to bring a cooler for your water and lunch\, but alcohol is prohibited.\n\nRegister:\nRegister HERE for walking cleanup. \nRegister HERE for paddling cleanup. \n  \nAbout Earth Week:\nThe Cahaba River Society invites volunteers to join our Earth Week Clean-Up from April 21-25\, 2025. SUMMARY:Everything Is Great! A Town Hall for the People
DESCRIPTION:Part Town Hall\, Part improvised parody. \nReal issues and questions are fielded by comedians playing the roles of absent elected officials in this improvised live game show version of a TOWN HALL! \nComedians have come together to take the reins of the absurdity of our current political moment and create a hilarious and cathartic town hall event. \nAlabama native and internationally touring performer Matt Davis (MattDavisComedy.com) debuts a brand new show that addresses the current moment head on. \nDesigned in the vein of other Fringe Arts Festival shows Matt has produced\, the format combines interactive elements and improvised lines with an almost game show-esque excitement to parody the spectacle and dismissiveness on display between elected officials and the people they seem loath to represent. \nAn expert cast of improvisers (some of the area’s best) are thrown in the game to represent the absent\, empty chair\, elected officials. Through a series of rounds the comedians lend their voice to the missing officials\, and answer real questions and concerns posed by the audience. But! The comedians must toe-the-line that “everything is great” in all their responses. That is\, if they wish to receive points from our host\, Mr. Dark Money himself. The audience\, however\, is here to win\, too! And they boo and jeer on queue\, amid ridiculous answers\, blatant sponsorships\, redemption groveling\, surprise guests\, and other wild happenings. \nAll together it turns our town hall parody into a hilarious evening of improvised comedy\, and real community catharsis! Grab your civic-minded friends\, or those you think need to be inspired to get involved\, and meet us April 30th at Saturn in Avondale for what we hope is the first of many wild and funny nights. \nMore info can be found on: https://TownHallShow.com

Teams of volunteers will work with onsite experts to find and identify as many species of plants and animals\, on land and in the water\, as can be found on this special site. \nWhat will we be documenting and how will it be recorded? \nWith your help\, we will be documenting a variety of species\, including: \n\nBirds and mammals\nFish\, mussels\, and aquatic macroinvertebrates\nReptiles and amphibians\nInsects and arachnids\nPlant species\, lichens and fungi\nWater quality\n\nWe will record observations using iNaturalist or good old pen and paper. \niNaturalist is a FREE online database and smart phone app that allows users to upload and share photos of living things that they observe in nature. It helps users to identify their own observations and share them with their community\, connecting people to nature and advancing biodiversity science and conservation. \nTo participate in the BioBlitz\, anyone can use their smart phone to take a photo of a living thing at Oak Mountain State Park on the day of the BioBlitz\, and upload it to iNaturalist using either the smartphone app or the website. \nWe recommend using the app and downloading the app and setting up your free account ahead of time. This will give you a chance to check it out and practice uploading observations. Also\, cell service can be spotty in some areas of the park\, so you may not be able to download it there. Don’t worry–you can still record observations in the app even if you don’t have phone service. They will sync next time you connect to the internet.

SUMMARY:Mom’s Basement Cleanup Series – May 10
DESCRIPTION:When: Saturday\, May 10th 2025 from 9 am to 3 pm\nMeeting Location: Little Cahaba River off Cahaba Beach Rd\nDay of event contact: Wil Rainer\, Mobile: (901) 210-7850\nAvailability: We have room for 22 volunteers in CRS boats. Participants are welcome to bring their own craft. Please indicate during registration if you plan to bring your own boat.\nRegistration: Click here!\n\n\n\n  \nWhat to expect: \nThis is a paddling cleanup in canoes.\n  \nThe Little Cahaba River winds its way from Moody through Leeds\, eventually joining the Cahaba River just north of Highway 280. Along its journey\, it flows through forests\, beneath urban landscapes\, and into a reservoir. It serves as a habitat for threatened and endangered species\, yet it also faces the challenges of both intentional and unintentional pollution.\n  \nWe will be meeting on Cahaba Beach Rd where we’ll pass out gear and choose our paddling partners for the day. We will set the shuttle before the trip so that your car is at the Siccard Hollow side when we get off the water. This process will take from 20-30 minutes. More details of the shuttle process will be shared at the event. For more information on the stretches of the Cahaba check out the Cahaba Blueway. River segment is dependent on weather and water level.\n  \nCRS will provide canoes\, paddles\, life jackets\, grabbers\, bags\, and gloves. There is no charge for this trip. Folks are absolutely welcome and encouraged to head to the CRS website for donations to offset program costs to CRS.\n\n\n  \nAfter every Mom’s Basement Cleanup there will be an afterparty at Mom’s Basement with drink specials and prize giveaways for each participant! Details will be given at the cleanup.\n  \nWhat to bring: \n\n\n Water (at least 1 liter)\n Lunch\n Sunscreen\n Sun hat\nClose-toed shoes (required)\n\nYou are welcome to bring a cooler for your water and lunch\, but alcohol is prohibited. \n  \n\nRegister HERE\n  \n\nYou will receive a reminder the week before this event with further information. This guided canoe trip offers a rare opportunity to experience the breathtaking beauty of these iconic flowers in their natural habitat. \nThe Cahaba lily trip is one of our more physically demanding excursions\, requiring participants to drag their boats across Caffee Shoals on the return trip to the boat launch. As you step out to pull your canoe\, keep in mind that the rocks can be extremely slippery\, so caution is essential. This is why closed-toe shoes are required for all participants. \nDespite the challenge\, the reward is well worth the effort. The sight of the Cahaba lilies in full bloom is truly unforgettable. These resilient flowers are uniquely adapted to life in swift-moving water. Unlike their close relative\, the swamp lily\, which grows in marshes where its seeds can float\, the Cahaba lily’s seeds sink and settle among the foliated rocks of the limestone shoals\, ensuring their survival in the dynamic currents of the Cahaba River. \nWe encourage participants to bring cameras to capture the beauty of the lilies\, but please remember that we will be in the water\, so plan accordingly to protect your gear. This is an experience you won’t want to miss. \n  \nWhat to Expect on Your Guided Canoe Trip\nJoin us for a guided canoe trip through the stunning Cahaba River National Wildlife Refuge\, where you’ll experience the beauty of Alabama’s longest free-flowing river and its famous Cahaba lilies. \nMeeting & Departure \n\nOur group will meet at 8:15 AM at Amped Fitness (3427 Colonnade Pkwy\, Birmingham\, AL 35243) to caravan to the Cahaba River National Wildlife Refuge.\nWe will depart promptly at 8:30 AM. You’re welcome to join the caravan or travel to the refuge on your own.\nIf you’ll be meeting us at the Cahaba Wildlife Refuge\, plan to meet at Canoe Beach by 10:00 AM.\nBe advised that there is limited cell service in the Refuge\, so plan your trip ahead of time.\nPlease notify Wil Rainer at wilr@cahabariversociety.org of your travel plans.\n\nThe Canoe Trip Experience \nThis guided paddle follows a down-and-back route\, made easier by the river’s unique geology. As we navigate the Cahaba: \n\nYou’ll witness the contrast between limestone shoals\, where the Cahaba lilies thrive\, and deep sandstone pools with slower-moving water\, allowing us to paddle back upstream\, returning to our starting point.\nUpon arrival at Hargrove Shoals\, we’ll enjoy a scenic lunch among the lilies (please bring your own brown bag lunch).\n\nImportant Notes \n\nWeather & Water Conditions: Guided trips are subject to weather and river conditions. If there are any changes or cancellations\, we will notify all participants. Due to the brief nature of the lilies’ blooming season\, it is unlikely that a trip will be rescheduled.\n\n  \nWhat to Bring\n\nWater (at least 1 liter)\nLunch\nSunscreen\nSun hat\nClose-toed water shoes. Sandals and flip-flops are not protective enough when walking through the shoals. This site shows some of the shoes our team might be wearing. Old tennis shoes also work well.\nPhotography equipment (waterproof bags are recommended for any technology)\n\nYou are welcome to bring a cooler for your water and lunch\, but alcohol is prohibited. \n  \nRegistration:\nTRIP IS CURRENTLY FULL Email our Field Programs Director\, Wil Rainer to get added to the waitlist

SUMMARY:Sunday Story Seven - Storytelling Open Mic with MATT DAVIS and special musical guest JANET SIMPSON
DESCRIPTION:Storytelling Variety Show + Open Mic\nFeatured Storyteller Matt Davis\nStories & Songs with special guest Janet Simpson\nhosted by Becca Rothman \nAct I – Open Mic storytelling. Put your name in the hat for a chance to share a personal\, true story onstage. \nAct II – Our featured storyteller (and critically-acclaimed\, world-renowned comedian) Matt Davis will share a ten-minute prepared story. \nAct III – Stories and Songs with Janet Simpson \nJanet Simpson is a force of intuition. The Birmingham legend has shared her presence as a deep\, patient listener and her fierce power as a singer\, guitarist\, and keyboardist to bands like Wooden Wand (World War IV)\, Delicate Cutters\, Teen Getaway\, and Timber. But on Can I See You Tonight (out soon via Cornelius Chapel Records)\, Simpson’s unmatched prescience is channeled toward her own visions\, expansive yet spellbindingly intimate. The follow-up to her stunning solo debut Safe Distance (2021)\, it’s a wryly observant alt-country tapestry with frayed edges that gesture toward Simpson’s history in DIY and punk scenes. Her talent as a bandleader shines even brighter on this second album as she taps freely into that restless collaborative spirit\, weaving worn-in\, effortless folk rock arrangements with her band. The songs on Can I See You Tonight are haunting stills in time\, shot through with longing – the lyrics haiku-precise\, the band dialed in to one another\, and to Simpson\, her deep well of a voice brimming over. \n* * * * * \nMore details:\nHave you always wanted to tell a story onstage? Or do you prefer to listen while others share? Either way\, join us at the monthly storytelling variety show the Sunday Story Seven. The open mic is open to new and seasoned storytellers – just put your name in the hat for a chance to tell a 5-minute true tale. No notes\, no theme – just you and the mic! Never tried a storytelling open mic before? Love hearing true\, personal stories? Love live music? Come see what it’s all about.
