SUMMARY:The Drifters & Cornell Gunter’s Coasters
DESCRIPTION:It’s not a concert…it’s a party! Spend a nostalgic evening saluting two of the world’s most beloved musical groups who were instrumental in creating the Rock & Roll/Doo Wop sound: \nCornell Gunter’s Coasters: Known for hits like “Charlie Brown\,” “Yakety Yak\,” and “Poison Ivy\,” this group brings a comedic flair to their performances that will have you reminiscing about the golden age of Rock & Roll. \nThe Drifters: One of Rock & Roll’s founding vocal groups\, The Drifters are touring the U.S. again under the auspices of their original management team. With a 50-year catalog of hits such as “Under the Boardwalk\,” “Up on the Roof\,” “This Magic Moment\,” and “On Broadway\,” they deliver a timeless sound that continues to resonate with audiences. \nCombined\, these two Rock & Roll Hall of Fame groups have been associated with well over forty of the top classic songs in Rock & Roll history. From “Under the Boardwalk” to “Yakety Yak\,” very few artists can boast a richer musical resume. With such incredible musical diversity—from the comedy of Cornell Gunter’s Coasters to the Motown magic of The Drifters—this show has songs to please every palate\, delivered just the way you remember them when you first heard them on the radio.

SUMMARY:ATOS meeting featuring Jay Mitchell at the Mighty Wurlitzer
DESCRIPTION:The Alabama Chapter of the American Theatre Organ Society will host a March chapter meeting March 30\, featuring a performance by Jay Mitchell at Big Bertha\, the Alabama Theatre’s Mighty Wurlitzer Theatre Pipe Organ. Guests are welcome and there is no admission fee to attend. \nIt will be another visit to a dear\, close relative for Jay\, as he returns to “Aunt Bertha”\, The Alabama Theatre’s big Wurlitzer organ.  Jay grew up on this organ\, learning\, practicing\, and performing.  His earliest performances were rather stiff renditions of jazz tunes he played on the organ for “Teen Time”\, a regular Saturday morning talent show for teenagers\, during the late 1950s. \nPursuing college studies\, playing for church services\, directing a church choir and opening two organ teaching studios during the 1960s\, took him away from the theatre and the organ\, but he returned to the Alabama in 1970 to work with the Southeastern Chapter ATOS (now Atlanta ATOS) in refurbishing the organ. His renewed contact with the instrument led to his appointment as curator of the organ\, and with two of his organ students\, the beginning of the Alabama Chapter ATOS. \nDuring this March 30th play fest\, Jay will be looking for some not to be forgotten old tools he and Larry Donaldson used to use working on the organ during their midnight to dawn work sessions….a homemade volt meter and a couple of old telephone system headsets…sure to be found somewhere close by the old relay room. \n

SUMMARY:An Evening with Judy Collins
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets \n \nDoors open 6:30 p.m.\, show at 7:30 p.m. \n\nLegendary Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Judy Collins has inspired audiences with sublime vocals\, boldly vulnerable songwriting\, personal life triumphs\, and a firm commitment to social activism. \nIn the 1960s\, she evoked both the idealism and steely determination of a generation united against social and environmental injustices. Five decades later\, her luminescent presence shines brightly as new generations bask in the glow of her iconic 50-album body of work\, and heed inspiration from her spiritual discipline to thrive in the music industry for half a century. \nWith hits like “Both Sides Now\,” “Send in the Clowns\,” and “Someday Soon\,” Collins has left an indelible mark on the world of music for six decades. Her landmark 1967 album\, Wildflowers\, has been entered into the Grammy Hall of Fame. \nIn 2022\, Judy Collins released her first studio album of all original material\, entitled Spellbound\, which marks the first time she herself has written all the songs on one of her albums. Judy says of the album\, “Now felt like the perfect time to make this record because\, after all that’s happened in the world\, we need something beautiful and inspirational to lift us up.” Spellbound features 12 modern folk songs\, and “unfolds as if Judy curated a museum exhibit of her life\, and welcomed us into a retrospective of her most formative moments\, some big and public\, and some intensely personal and intimate.” \n\nParking Info: \n\nThe Lyric Theatre is not responsible for parking and does not provide any free parking for concerts.\nParking meters are free after 6pm on weekdays and all day on Saturday and Sunday.\nPlease be aware of tow-away zones. Lots marked “permit parking only” are tow-away zones and they will tow your vehicle at your expense.

SUMMARY:Porcelain Vessels Workshop with John Oles
DESCRIPTION:In this hands-on workshop\, we will explore ways of working with porcelain to create functional and sculptural forms using techniques such as altering\, darting\, faceting\, and slip decorating to take advantage of properties inherent to the material. \nOur focus will be based on the vessel\, though not always in the context of the functional pot\, with an emphasis on creating forms that enhance daily life by showing off the unique characteristics of porcelain such as surface\, color\, fluidity and translucency. The teaching artist will provide a selection of glazes for students to choose from. The finished pieces will be glazed and fired in a cone 10 reduction atmosphere. \nThis is a great introduction to working with porcelain for students who have always been curious about it or those who wish to expand their vocabulary of techniques and skillset. Because of the nature of the material\, it is recommended that students come with some prior clay experience and be able to throw a 2.5lb-3lb. bowl or cylinder. \nThis workshop is taught by John Oles. John Oles was born in Wrentham\, Massachusetts\, and holds a BFA in Ceramics from the University of Massachusetts (1998) and an MFA from Tulane University (2008) in New Orleans\, Louisiana. John taught ceramics at Loyola University from 2008-2013. Currently\, John is Associate Professor of Ceramics at Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville\, AL.

SUMMARY:2025 Birmingham Heart Walk
DESCRIPTION:About the 2025 Birmingham Heart Walk\n\n9 out of 10 people who suffer cardiac arrest outside the hospital die. In most of those cases\, bystander CPR was not performed. But we can change this. \nCardiac arrests happen at work\, in homes\, on athletic fields and in neighborhoods everywhere\, and the readiness of our community can be the difference between life and death. Javion was saved by his coach’s quick CPR action when he collapsed on the basketball court. Stories like Javion’s can become more common by creating communities who are ready to act in the case of an emergency. \nIt’s time to unite\, take action\, and save lives. Our goal is to have one person in every household confident and prepared to perform CPR. The American Heart Association invites YOU to join the Heart Walk to broaden our impact by turning bystanders into lifesavers. \nRegister now to take the first step in saving lives. Every walker who joins\, every dollar donated\, means more people trained in lifesaving CPR\, more research and more lifesaving moments for everyone. \nI Walk to Save Lives. You can too! \nClick here to learn more about Javion’s story. \n
